In France during the 1970's there was a mainstream movement that aimed to abolish the age of consent and legalise sex between adults and children. It was supported by respected intellectuals such as Michel Foucault, Gilles Deleuze, Jean-Paul Sartre, and Félix Guattari. "Child liberation" was seen as an extension of the queer rights movement and sexual revolution, which aimed to radically shift societies attitude towards sex. During the 1980's and beyond however, this became a much less acceptable position to hold publicly. The queer rights movement also actively severed ties with the pro pedophilia movement.
