Wealth disparity =/= class. Anybody who is familiar with the class system in Britain would understand this implicitly. A true class distinction only develops from protracted periods of separation between different social groups. In other words: a lack of social mobility is the problem. When the ranks of the wealthy rarely ever see new membership, that group ossifies into a hereditary caste, a social class with its own distinct culture generated by its insular nature. This is further reified by interpersonal relationships of individuals becoming exclusively internal to the nascent class. However, where Marxist rhetoric falls apart is when they start talking about "the working class" as a coherent cultural unit. In Britain, when they talk about the "working class" they use it merely as a label for poor people that sounds less insulting to their ears. They're not "poor and desperate", they're hard working! Industrious! It makes the poors feel complemented and appreciated even as they accept the Othering label given to them.And it also prevents them from actually forming a class of their own. By that, I mean a real class, comparable to what the elite have. A true social order, rather than a miscellany of leftover people which is its actual condition. Marxists try to convince the poor that the label given to them by the elite is a valid identity, but that's rubbish.
