Why are people who live in shitholes religious?
>>18625664To cope
>>18625664People in east asia may not be religious but they're still theistic. For some reason people think theism and religion are synonymous. The Chinese for example still have their weird superstitions and ancestor worship and Buddhist/Taoist carryover traditions. They aren't religious because they don't answer to a central religious authority or canon. Not a Christard or anything, just pointing out that these types of surveys tend to leave out a lot of context
>>18625666/threwait a second i don't like those digits...
>>18625678also that even in the west, explicit atheism or denial of religion is a very fringe position. Most people nowadays would fall into the apathy category in that they don't really care about religion one way or another, which is often represented as either "spiritualist not religious" or "agnostic"
>>18625664Chinese people shit in the streets.
>>18625664It was Christianity and later Islam who introduced the idea that culture and religion are separate from one another. In pre-Christian Europe and in non-Abrahamic countries like Japan and China, the line between culture and religion is far more blurry. For example, the only reason China is considered “atheist” is because they don’t classify their customs as religious even though by all accounts they should be.Similarly, Japan is according to multiple surveys 70% Shinto, 70% Buddhist, and 70% Atheist all at the same time because “religion” as a concept is not native to Japan. Buddhism in Japan historically syncretized with Shinto and even though most Japanese don’t believe in the existence of Kami anymore or that the imperial family is descended from the sun goddess Amaterasu, they still engage in Shinto religious practices for cultural reasons.
>>18625664Projecting western definitions of religious into totally foreign cultures makes no sense.
>>18625796And Americans OD on the streets. We all have our struggles:)
>>18625790That's honestly way harder to comprehend though. Yeah, there's an all powerful, potentially all good being who created everything and may actively intercede in events and... meh? Who cares, lol? Being a militant atheist makes 100x more sense than that.
>>18625664You have it backwards. You should ask why all of the first world lost Religion.Religion was Darwinian advantageous. Territorial Control meant winning wars, and simple numbers meant you win. Islam conquered the Middle East, Christianity Europe, and Buddhism conquered Asia. But for some reason(the jews) during the 20th century, religion became less important for first world countries. We all had Christian monarchies(except the US) until it fell out of style for secular democracy. Who knows why?(the jews)
>>18626352>Territorial Control meant winning wars, and simple numbers meant you winThat's why Britain was able to amass the second largest empire ever and rule over a billion people with a standing army which was like 100k strong...
>>18626358>standing army which was like 100k strong...Leaving out the mercs, auxiliary, policing forces, vassal state forces and more.
>>18626350It's also more anti-spiritual then atheism and agnostic positions.
>>18626359By numbers most of those were brown. India was conquered by a handful of whites using house nigger pajeets to slay other pajeets. How did a small nation (and a small continent) which never had more than 1/4 of the world's population come to dominate the globe if raw numbers are what matter?
>>18626364>By numbers most of those were brownStill part of the military forces anon.
>>18626358Vastly superior technology surpassed religion for territorial control. My original thesis still stands. It’s not a coincidence the entire world formed religions around the same time, and not many more since that time.

>>18625664How come Muslims in Southeast Asia dont blow people up like the Arabs do?
>>18626567God is the ground of all being, literally Being itself, you can no more exist without God than you can without space and time. Being a materialist in denial of this reality is the ostrich with its head in the sand method.
>>18626588Yet here I am. Even if there was a prime mover who was conscious of what he was doing, then there is no reason to assume he has any resemblance to your god (Whichever one it is. Lord Vishnu?)

>>18626738I'm sure you can similarly prove that the universe or matter has always existed? I'm not sure even the typical atheist/materialist myths necessarily say this, they usually use that one priest's idea of the Big Bang. Are you Mormon perhaps, seeing as they believe matter to be eternal and posit an endless multitude of gods?>>18626734>Yet here I amIn denial. You think you can be without being itself. Sad!
>>18626794>I'm sure you can similarly prove that the universe or matter has always existed?my point is that there is a possibility that the universe always existed, which is also more parsimonious, but i dont need to claim to know with certainty, while christcucks on the other hand, do claim to know, but cant prove it, like you.

>>18627380>believing that we might never know how the universe came to be and just living your life is actually the same as people believing there is a specific god that created man from mud and woman from his rib that he placed in a garden with a specific nature and a specific bad tree he knew the people will eat from so he choose to punish all their descendants after they ate from it and then he sent himself as a human to die to choose to pay a price to himself to appease himself but not really give up anything and not really die since hes god or so some 2k year old collection of books says so now we go and do rituals like believing that we are eating the body and blood of that person from 2k years ago, prostrate before and talk to that deity that never actually talks freely in this world which is his creation that he loves but lets millions of babies be raped throughout history while he watches and does nothing btwah yes, its almost exactly the same!

>>18625664It depends a lot on country. They are religious often but often don't have theistic religions with creator Gods. In some cases like Japan, religious identity means that one is Kannushi, a Buddhist Ajari like a preceptor or a priest. It means a type of sectarian affiliation, whereas most people have a local regsitered Buddhist temple and local Shinto shrines and a Shingon Buddhist temple they go to on certain days of the year. Religion is otherwise highly private and not performed in front of others and not something you identify as having if at all. Public identification outside of that often has nationalist connotations less than religious ones ironically and marks you as outside of normal society. The most common practiced religion in Japan is Shin Buddhism while in China, Pure Land Buddhism is very common but it is often practiced with Chan or dual cultivation. Here are some lectures on both.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62HrqAuLduM&list=PLKBfwfAaDeaWBcJseIgQB16pFK4_OMgAs&index=10https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VteQhmbCVlA&list=PLKBfwfAaDeaWBcJseIgQB16pFK4_OMgAs&index=8>>18626342This basically.
In contemporary China, religious identity can be syncretic, combining Chinese Buddhism, Tibetan Buddhism, especially of the Kagyu and Sakya philosophical and practice lineages, Daoism, Chinese folk religion or local religion, and Confucian ethical traditions without necessarily viewing these traditions as mutually exclusive. Often, a person may practice these while rejecting religion as well quite openly and we are talking deep practice. At the same time, Christianity and Islam generally produce more clearly bounded communal identities and tend to have ethnic elements, Catholics and Orthodox Christians tend to be less ethnic. Some Tibetan Buddhists may also have an element of that as well depending on the lineage. Uyghur or Hui Islam may also intersect strongly with ethnic and regional identity too. Basically, non-theistic religions from China tend to be elements without sectarian performance or identity partially.
It is important to note that in Buddhism which have very technical fine distinctions, the average person does not tend to seperate them out. So the difference bewteen Far East Asian Buddhism and Himalayan Buddhist traditions does not quite exist. When you go to the south you may see even Theravada Buddhism in there as well. Westerners think often in a almost Protestant like understanding of canon but there exist still things like the Mongolian Canon, Manchu Canon and Puhui Canon or. Puhuizang which is a Sino-Sri Lankan Buddhist canon. These exist and often break down western concepts of these traditions. In practice, they think more often in terms of what one is practicing or the practice lineage. So whether one follows vinaya, is a layman or so on.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7G2fbtS0ph0

Religious Daoism a bit more sectarian than Buddhism in China. Religious Daoism in contemporary China is sectarian in its clergy and institutional lineages, but much less sectarian at the level of ordinary religious practice. A person would only identify as it if they were a part of those lineages. The two major officially recognized traditions are Quanzhen (全真, “Complete Perfection”) and Zhengyi (正一, “Orthodox Unity”). They differ substantially in clerical organization and lifestyle. Quanzhen Daoism developed a celibate, monastic model in which ordained priests traditionally live in temples, observe vegetarianism, and undergo formal ordination; Zhengyi priests are generally nonmonastic, may marry, and historically function much more as ritual specialists embedded in local communities. Generally, people often go them for rituals.
The local stuff is also not identified as a religion but still practiced. Examples of field gods. Earth God or Tudi Gong (土地公) cults are probably among the clearest examples. A village, neighborhood, field, or other territory may have its own Earth God responsible for the prosperity and protection of that particular place. Closely related are City God (城隍, Chenghuang) cults, in which a particular city has a divine protector who participates in the larger Chinese conception of a celestial bureaucracy. Often understood in Buddhist terms as devas and wordly deities, but not necessarily, they are seen as local community features. They often are synonymous with one's local town so identifying as a person from a town is equivalent to being a member of this but member of them would not exclude one from socially acceptable religions. An exception to this would be Mazu. It came from the southeastern coast, particularly Fujian. Mazu is a maritime goddess associated especially with fishermen, sailors, merchants, and coastal communities. However, it spread and she took on new life as a major figure in certain sectarian Daoist lineages.
In some cases it is a bit more ethnic related but still coexists with other religions. A really unique example is the Dongba religion. Dongba priests preserve ritual texts written in the famous Dongba pictographic script and perform ceremonies involving spirits, ancestors, nature, death, purification, and other aspects of Naxi cosmology. Pic related. Dongba religious practioners are a part of the Nakhi ethnic group. They also tend to practice in the Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wnazVNrtk68
Beause being religious is linked to having a lower IQ.Browns have low IQ and live in shithole countries because they aren't capable of running a succesful country.Therefor they are more likely to be religious

One element of Japanese religion not discussed often is that a lot of Japanese religion is esoteric or transmitted orally and in small groups often locally. Shingon and Tendai Buddhism play a big role in this regard in the form of Shinbutsu-shūgō. Many hyper local types of Shinto, not state shinto but shinto one must be associated with via location. Often local rivers, spirits, mountains and animals are identiifed as devas in the Buddhist interpretation or as worldy deities or simply as nature spirits with no such affiliation. Another very hidden private religion is the Myōken which is connetected with Shingon and Tendai but also exists outside of Buddhism as well and is hyper local and fixed by location. Often mistaken by westerns for a single deity or for other Chinese motifs. It is actually 28 different ones and tended to be associated with specific Tendai and Shingon practices that during nationalist Shinto times was persecuted.
>>18625664well im ethiopian so we've been around believing in ts since christ basically.
Another element not talked about publically also is the actual beliefs about things like Tengu and Kitsune which are also assciated with Buddhism. These are not the figures depicted in anime though. They are basically deva or formless realm beings who can be associated postively with Buddhism or be types of nature spirits with their own turf. In the case of Shinto, they are seen as beings who one can make contracts with. Pic is of Doriyo. He is associated with Soto Zen in Japan. Basically a monastic from Daiyuzan Saijoji, who was believed to have made a bodhisattva vow who then was reborn as a Tengu to better rebuild a monastery and help others with anger problems. These type of beings may be the object of various practices that are local and people may do so without any religious affiliation.
