Even in the Republic of Venice the official Venetian language got gradually cucked by Tuscan. This started happening back in the late Middle Ages thanks to the influence of the works of Dante, Petrarch and Bocaccio, and by the time of the Risorgimento the status of Italian was already unshakeable.
