We're now on Day #34 of my daily US states threads in honor of the 250th anniversary of the country.North Dakota joined as the 39th/40th state on 11/2/1889. Because both states were vying for who would join first, president Harrison intentionally shuffled the papers before signing them so nobody knew which one joined first. The states are named for the Dakota people. North Dakota has a population of 799k and is 70.7k square miles in size. Its capital is Bismarck and its largest city is Fargo.North Dakota was inhabited by groups such as the Sioux, Mandan, Hidatsa, and Crow. The first Europeans were French traders who arrived in 1738. The cold and windy state proved unpopular with settlers, keeping Europeans out for the most part. A large number of Norwegian immigrants came to the area in the late 19th century.The railroads brought some settlers into the region, but not as many as in the south. The Non-Partisan League was founded in 1915 owing to unrest among wheat farmers, but was only marginally successful. The state also became known for strong anti-corporate laws which made it very difficult to foreclose on farmland, ironically saving North Dakota from some of the worst effects of the Great Depression. Today the state is reliant on oil production for its economy, and has some of the lowest crime rates in the whole country.What do you think of The Peace Garden State?
