Uranium-238 is omnipresent in the Earth's crust and has a half-life of roughly 4.5 billion years, by measuring the ratio between Uranium-238 and its decay products within a given sample we can determine roughly when it formed and thus conclude that the Earth must've formed over 4 billion years ago from a proto-planetary disc and not over the course of 6 days by some invisible man in the sky. If you still grant that it was ultimately God who created this Earth, you must ask why said God made it appear as though the Earths creation differs from religious accounts
>>

You believe that all humans are inbred if you believe in the creation story.

>>
>>18629734
We know the decay rate of radioisotopes are constant because they release heat as a decay product, and if said decay rates were faster in the past, they would've released enough heat to fundamentally change the crust and chemical makeup of the Earths crust in such a way that there would be clear evidence of it. If you believe the laws of thermodynamics are not constant either, then we have even bigger problems, and the bolder your claims are, the more evidence you'll need to back them up
>>
>>18629734
Because there is no evidence to support the contrary? You are the one making the claim so the burden of proof is on you.
What evidence do you have that the laws of the universe changed over time?
>>
>>18629748

No, I don't believe in the faith-based religion of uniformitarianism. You're the one making the faith-based claims here, so you better back them up.

Well, the laws of thermodynamics can be broken up into two fundamental constituents
1.) conservation of energy
and
2.) the second law of thermodynamics

These must be constant because they are the result of statistical consequences, for the conservation of energy, it must exist as a result of time translation symmetry, and for the second law of thermodynamics, it's simple statistics, based on the total number of possible ways particles can arrange themselves within a given system. In fact, at this point you aren't even arguing the laws of physics, you're arguing the basis of logic itself
>>
>>18629766
The atheist "laws" keep changing from century to century. The burden of proof is on you to prove that they stayed the same for BAZINGILLIONS of years.

Radiometric dating of Uranium-238

I don’t understand why they choose to defend young earth idiocy instead of just saying “maybe 6 days to God is 12 billion years to a mortal”. I remember a few years back young earthers were claiming that a particularly large hill slump crevasse in wyoming was evidence that the grand canyon could’ve formed in 2 days. You can’t reason with that kind of stupidity.

First, what method have they used that we must accept as valid and truth?

Second, when God created Adam he did not made him a new born baby but a fully grown adult. Even though he was just a day old he looked fully matured and fully developed as if he was many years old.

Same way when God created the earth he did not created as a new born world, he created it fully formed, even though it was just 8 days old it looked fully matured and fully developed as if was millennia old.

>>
>>18629870
The universe is expanding outwards in all directions uniformly, gravitational barycenters notwithstanding, so as a consequence of the inherently limited speed of light, the visible universe is centered on its present observer, which in this case is the Earth, however, the Earth still orbits the sun, the sun still orbits the galactic center, the galactic center in theory orbits the barycenter of the Local Group and so on

not that anon and I'm not even a committed young (or old) Earth creationist but how do you actually know that what is being read into the data and what it means, is what it actually means? What I mean by this is how do you know fundamental assumptions about the numbers being used/attached to what is happening to the isotopes to determine their 'age' is actually reliable or even real? How do you know the ratio/associated math in regards to the half-life decay and what it even is is actually real and what is really happening and not just arbitrary? What if your fundamental a priori assumptions and baseline understanding of what you are looking at is actually wrong?

This is similar to a problem with the evidence for evolution that seems so self-evidently intuitive and straightforward - the genetic similarities between species and gene similarities between more closely 'related' species that resemble each other - but if you really think about it deeply there is the scary possibilty that what is being looked at doesn't mean what it seems to mean at all, that what if the similarities and apparent 'relatedness' is just the fact that the DNA are the building blocks like lego so of course, for example, a chimp's DNA would be really similar to a human's because a chimp is just simply shaped and structured to look similar to a human; what if you are just looking at building blocks but the building blocks don't actually turn into each other or become something else? There is no actual evidence that the DNA is not just the building blocks/code for how you get that shape of creature and not that they actually gradate and cross-over into becoming another creature.

>How do you know a magic daddy Jew hecking wholesome pepperoni Rabbi sacrificed himself to himself to save himself from himself

Alright so you seem to be pretty slow, so let me try and break this down for you

Uranium-238 is omnipresent in the Earths crust
It decays into lead-206 over the course of 4.5 billion years

We can determine its half-life by measuring its radiation-count-rate over time. We don't need fancy lab equipment to see ionization events, it can be done with a cloud chamber you can make with parts from the hardware store, it's typically on the order of counts per second to counts per minute. The weight of a given radioactive sample also changes as it decays

Knowing the half-life of a radioactive sample, tells us how old that sample is, because it began its decay process as soon as it formed. This can all be done with middle school lab supplies. How about instead of baselessly raising questions you take 5 minutes to learn. I have a feeling you don't actually have any interest in doing this though

I don't think you understand what I am asking. I am asking how do you know that it decaying and becoming the other isotope is what is actually happening and/or when it began given that it happens on such a timescale beyond anyone's lifespans and more fundamentally how do you know the half-life calculation and concept isn't just arbitrary and made-up and is a misunderstanding of what is being observed?
>because it began its decay process as soon as it formed
how do you know this? why is there any reason to believe that this is the case? How do you even know it's constant?

Wow you're really not that smart

We. Can. See. The. Decay. Rate. In. Real. Time.
No, we won't be alive to witness half of an entire given sample turn into lead, but we are alive to witness the rate at which it decays, because it's literally happening in fucking real time. It also has multiple intermediate decay elements, such as radium and radon. Radon in particular is a know occupational hazard, as its particularly energetic since it has a half-life on the order of days and exists as a gas at normal pressures. Because of its short half-life, the only way it can be present in nature at all is because of uranium. There is a time and place to wax poetic about epistemology but now is not the time. You are not as smart as you think you are.

>You are not as smart as you think you are
I don't think I'm smart, that's why I'm asking you these questions
>>
>>18630142
Uranium is unstable, that's why it's radioactive, it's decay stars at the moment its atoms are formed, we know how long they've been decaying because the ratio between it and its decay products knowing its decay rate
>duuh buthow do we know uniformitarianism is reeeel!
In order for the decay rate to have been variable as to match biblical timescales, it would've needed to release a lot of energy, enough energy to leave physical evidence of some kind, such as melted rock, so you can rule that out. If your argument is that the laws of thermodynamics aren't constant, that fundamentally doesn't make any sense, as the basis of thermodynamics are the statistical configuration of particles in a given system.
>>
>>18630159
how do you know when the atoms were formed? And how do you know that the formula used to calculate decay rate isn't just arbitrary and actually applies and isn't just made-up out of nowhere?

You know how we know? Because it's useful. It allows us to make more accurate geologic timelines as its collaborated with physical evidence, which helps us understand how the Earth formed, how life evolved on it, and how the Earth is continuing to evolve in the future
If you really want to be reductionist and say we don't fundamentally know anything that's your prerogative but the people out there doing actual, useful work rely on this data for their day-to-day jobs. A Bible isn't going to help anyone run a nuclear power plant. If all ideologies are limited epistemologically, then the closest "true" philosophy is Pragmatism

>Planes fly, cars drive, boats sail, computers compute, fertilizer fertilizes, and parachutes break falls
fair enough although applied theory in the form of technology for things like engineering is not the same thing as abstract theory that happens over massive timescales that can not be directly observed. But that's not here nor there, evolution being true or not has no real bearing on salvation.

>faith healing doesn't heal
maybe not but miraculous healings associated with the sacraments of apostolic (Catholic/Orthodox) churches, icons and Saintly relics have been reported to actually heal people (the Lord working through them). The Catholic Saint Charbel Makhlouf, for example, has thousands of documented healings associated with him/at his monastery.
>abstinence-only indoctrination doesn't reduce teen pregnancy
this is simply just because of the nature of the passions/sin and that lust is extremely difficult to overcome, especially in the modern world where it is highly incentivized. If said teenagers were attending a real church with real spiritual guidance on how to overcome such things however, then it would probably be more effective. Christianity isn't just American evangelical Protestantism.

No, it is not question logic. This is a question for PHYSICS. The fundamental ASSUMPTION that underlies the second law of thermodynamics is a assumption on the physics. In fact, many have tried to explain it and failed.

Also there's two more laws that are necessary. The zeroth and third law of thermodynamics.

they don't check, they actively think they're better off just not knowing how things work because they think it allows them to maintain a sense of imagination about the world. They think that understanding how the world works trivializes it and reduces human experience down to their physical quanta rather than allowing for the possibility that the supernatural is still possible, which is something I can sympathize with, but being an adult is realizing the two things don't have to be mutually exclusive per se, they just haven't gotten there yet.
