The Greco-Roman religion wasn't static and it's view of the afterlife changed over time. Yes, the realm of Hades was seen as a bleak and miserable place in Homer's time. But over the centuries they developed the idea that where you went to in Hades depended on your moral character (the virtuous went to Elysium, the ordinary to Asphodel, and the wicked to Tartarus). Moreover the belief in reincarnation was widespread and it was commonly thought by pagans in late antiquity that after spending a thousand years in those aforementioned places, your soul would be reborn. This belief was so widespread even the Aeneid mentions it. Plus many philosophies like Neoplatonism and various mystery cults like Orphism also believed in the escaping the cycle of reincarnation (kinda similar to Buddhism), the Orphics also believed in the purification of sins which shows that Christianity did not invent or have a monopoly on the idea of salvation.
