You could probably make a case that some countries did become poorer as a result of European colonization, but not necessarily in a direct way.The discovery of chili peppers in the Americas made it easy to grow paprika in much of Southern Europe, which undercut the earnings of spice traders who sold black pepper and longpepper from India and Ethiopia.The discovery of silver in Mexico and Bolivia led to currency devaluation in the Ottoman Empire.The exploration of the route around Cape of Good Hope by the Portuguese made the Ottomans unnecessary as intermediaries in the Spice and Silk Routes.Industrialization in the United Kingdom made it extremely difficult for India's manual textile industries compete against the ones in England furnished with spinning jennies.It wasn't just colonization, as stated above, since it was also partly innovation and the adoption of new trade patterns and routes that led to the decline of certain countries, economically. The ones who suffered the most were obviously large merchants and great landowners who benefitted off foreign merchants that would have to pay a tribute in order to be given safe passage through their lands. The average peasant or tradesperson was still quite poor, but they did feel affected by such great economic shifts in terms of what was affordable for them, or what they could conveniently sell to others for a profit.
