We're now on Day #35 of my daily US states threads in honor of the 250th anniversary of the country.Ohio joined as the 17th state on 3/1/1803. Its name is a Seneca word meaning good/great river. Its capital and largest city is Columbus. It has a population of 11.9 Million and is 44.8k square miles in size. Seven presidents (Grant, Hayes, Garfield, Benjamin Harrison, McKinley, Taft, and Harding) are from here.Ohio was the site of multiple mound builder cultures like the Hopewell and others who famously constructed the Great Serpent Mound. It later became the heart of the Iroquois Confederation. The land was heavily fought for by both the French and English owing to its strategic geography, with the French ceding Ohio to England in 1763. Ohio was ceded to the USA in 1783.Remaining natives were expelled by 1842. The Shawnee and Tecumseh fought fiercely but were finally defeated at the Battle of the Thames in 1813. The famous Battle of Lake Erie was fought in Ohio when Commodore Perry defeated Admiral Barclay. Ohio rapidly industrialized, having numerous blast furnaces, railroads, coal, iron, and steel. It was contested during the Civil War with battles such as Shiloh and Buffington Is. All 3 top Union generals (Grant, Sherman, Sheridan) were from Ohio. A large number of Amish began to enter the state during this time and remain there to this day. The first airplane was designed by the Wright Brothers in Ohio in 1902, nicknaming it the birthplace of aviation. The NFL would be founded in 1920. Ohio remained a strong industrial state, and was the birthplace of Superman and (debatably) rock n' roll. An incident at Kent State in 1970 saw Ohio guard shooting college students who were protesting the Vietnam War. In 1979, Governor Rhodes helped mend relations with China, and the Dayton Accords were signed to end the Bosnian War. Deindustrialization has continued and though the rust belt hit Ohio hard it has since mostly recovered. What do you think of The Buckeye State?
