but fundamentally its because the soviets got buttfucked by the nazis and lost a whole generation along with a huge portion of their economic base, and then had to compete with a superpower that suffered no meaningful losses in ww2. china got free development from the US, which they used to jumpstart their economy and now they've replaced the US as the primary economic power on the planet
