What was the purpose of exercising naked in Greek gymnasiums?

Most Greeks could only afford a few tunics to swap between, and the poorer you were, the more likely it was that you only had a single tunic at all. Exercising naked was a way to make your current outfit last longer by not profusely sweating in it, so it could go longer without washing and/or getting damaged in the sports.Another related thing is that several exercises in Greek gymnasiums were contact sports like wrestling, and regular clothing (which most people would only have) would get in the way of the sport and potentially damage clothing. In the same way that modern wrestlers, boxers, etc wear minimal or skin-tight clothing, ancient Greeks would forego their regular clothing so it didn’t get in the way, and the easiest way to do that was to exercise in the nude.

Even in modern American art the portrayal of a genuine fat fuck is a rare occurrence, especially as a main character or someone who is cast in an aspirational light. The ancient Greeks might have praised physical beauty and valued physical health, but that doesn't mean it was a universal characteristic.
