We're now on Day #40 of my daily US states threads in honor of the 250th anniversary of the country.

South Carolina joined as the 8th state on 5/23/1788. It has a population of 5.6 Million and is 32k square miles in size. Its capital is Columbia and its largest city is Charleston. One president is (probably) from here (Jackson).
A powerful Mississippian chiefdom, Cofitachequi, ruled this area before the Europeans arrived, though most tribes were extirpated by the time of the establishment of the colony. The Spanish first explored SC in 1521, and in 1526 founded San Miguel de Guadalpe, the first European settlement in contiguous US territory. The settlement failed within 8 months.
The slave trade was the largest of all the colonies within South Carolina, not just Africans but Natives too. This made it one of the richest colonies as well. A third of all action during the Revolution took place in South Carolina. 30% of the slave population (25k) fled or died during this time.
The state grew rapidly, and had the largest Jewish population at the time as well, mainly in Savannah and Charleston. Cotton continued to be crucial to the state's economy. States rights continued to be impressed by South Carolinians, such as John C. Calhoun. The 1832 Nullification Crisis occurred when SC declared federal tariffs as unconstitutional, resulting in military force against the state.
South Carolina was the first state to secede, beginning the Confederacy and the Civil War. Afterwards in the 1890's the state became a hotbed of populist/agrarian movements owing to racial/economic tensions. Although the state was 58% black, they were disenfranchised by Jim Crow. This led to a migration which resulted in the state becoming white majority.
Despite the push from Strom Thurmond against it, South Carolina's transition from segregation was mostly peaceful. The state today is mainly known for its tourism, textiles, and manufacturing.

What do you think of The Palmetto State?

America's shame. Too bad they didn't have thermonuclear weapons in 1861 to use on it.
>>
>last state to have presidential electors selected by popular vote instead of the state legislature
>in the antebellum era you needed to own 20 slaves to be able to vote, consequently a hundred or so inbred families controlled everything and contributed to its extremist politics
>last state to adopt the secret ballot (not introduced until 1952)
absolutely medieval
>>
>>18640163
The state avoided major fighting for most of the Civil War outside the Navy's repeated and futile efforts to break into Charleston Harbor. After Sherman's army arrived in February 1865 they exacted vengeance on the state that started the whole war and demolished everything in their path.
>>

>resulting in military force against the state

not actually true. Andrew Jackson just threatened force. it seems that SC was just bluffing in the hope of getting the tariff scheduled renegotiated as they could not have conceivably taken on the government by themselves, and unlike 1860 the rest of the Southern states would have probably sided with the president against them.

RIP Lindsey

Jackson was a Dixie native; of course they would.

Southern nationalism didn't really develop as a thing until the 1840s onward as the abolitionist movement grew and made the South feel more wary.

>Commanding one of Buell's divisions was Brig. Gen Ormsby Mitchel, an amateur astronomer and one of the few generals who could see the bigger picture. Mitchel's division had been detached from the main Army of Ohio and sent to northern Alabama prior to Shiloh, so it missed the great battle. That summer, he presented to Halleck what he considered a great opportunity. Mitchel proposed that his division march through Georgia, sack Atlanta, and then turn north, go through the Carolinas, and march into Virginia and fall upon Richmond from the rear. This area of the South, he said, was nearly undefended and there would be nothing much there to stop him. The overly cautious Halleck predictably denied Mitchel's request.

The industrial gap was also growing over time. In 1832 the whole country was predominantly agrarian while by 1860 the North was well on the way to being a manufacturing colossus.
