Do you have any ancestors/relatives who fought in wars in the past?
>>
1 ancestor who got his shit rocked by Turks in WW1, another who died falling off a horse in the Irish revolution, and a living relative who fought for the Official IRA and then the Provisional IRA in the 1980s.

Yes. Great grandfather was a pilot on the eastern front, tho his missions were mostly as courier.

mostly everyone has, unless you are royalty

My great great grandfather fought in the Crimean War
>>
That I know of, my maternal grandfather was in the US army air corps in ww2, and was an air traffic controller in California who never went overseas. He met my grandmother during the war who was a civilian employee of the army working as a clerk whose job was to help officers/ncos put together letters recommending their subordinates for medals. They met at an army sponsored dance.

My paternal grandfather was in the army corps of engineers after ww2 but before korea and his enlistment ended just as the war was starting. He was offered a slot at a 3 month officer training course if he would remain in the army but refused. His former unit was almost completely wiped out early in the war.

I also had a great grandfather who was a US merchant mariner in ww1, and my paternal grandfather got really into geneology late in life and discovered that the first ancestor in the family with the same surname as him and I to immigrate to the US came from Russia in the 1880s and was fleeing from a draft notice in the Imperial Russian Army, because he was Jewish his term of conscription was 20 years. Sadly this means I can't say "my ancestors came here LEGALLY" since I know for a fact mine came in violation of Russian law and must have paid what we'd now call a coyote to smuggle him out, or bribed a magistrate/policeman to illegally get an exit visa or ignore his lack of one.

And the fact that you are totally jewish, a slav jew even.
To be honest, it feels like half of the US population at this point has jewish in them.

Did he work in the Los Angeles/Long Beach/Orange County area because if he did then my great grandfather could've met him

I am fully jewish. I have ancestors from all over central and eastern europe. Russia, ukraine, poland and Germany that I know of for certain, all Jewish. My maternal grandmother had an aunt who regularly would travel back to the ancestral village in Poland and, as I have been told, pleaded with them to emigrate to the US in the 30's but no one was willing to. As a result her entire extended family of over 50 people, men women and children, were killed during the war. If only they had known what was coming.

MY PATERNAL GREAT GRANDFATHER WAS A CRISTERO; MY PATERNAL GREAT UNCLE FOUGHT IN THE KOREAN WAR —HE WENT INSANE AFTERWARD.

He did, yeah. I remember as a kid asking if he'd wanted to be in combat and was disappointed by his assignment (now I think its foolish to be eager to be sent to the front, and a soldier should do their duty and nothing more, but I was a kid). I remember him responding with a story he said everyone talked about during the war where the family of a congressman had arranged for their son to be the jeep driver for a staff general in DC so he wouldn't be sent overseas, then he got into an accident and died, so nobody was really safe. Idk how true that story is, but he did say he would have had no problem going overseas if ordered to but was fine not having to do so.

I remember talking to a friend of his who had been in the infantry and fought at D-Day what it was like, when I was considering enlisting. He said "well its a lot like the movies, sleeping on the ground, in the cold, digging all the time. You don't get to see your family often. I don't recommend it." Which was the sum total of his war experience I ever pried out of him.
>>
>>18641880
Sorry to hear that. Glad at least your ancestors survived though.
>>
So my family is strange in that we all have children relatively late in our lives (late 30s-early 40s) and this goes back hundreds of years. We all ended up being either too young or too old to serve in whatever war was most relevant when they were alive. They did assist the Continental Army during the Revolution but no evidence they fought directly (again, the father was too old and his son was too young). For the World Wars it was similar, too young for World War 1, too old by the time World War 2 came around. He still served non-combat roles though. The only war my direct ancestors fought directly in as far as records go is the French and Indian War as an English belligerent of course

My great grandfather fought for the Germans in WW2 because he was a Slovak living in the former Duchy of Teschen, a contested area between Czechoslovakia and Poland. When the Poles took over his town and made a census he had to declare himself a German because otherwise he and his family would've been expelled. His descendants still live in their home town thanks to him

Maybe he wasn't trying too hard because the Turks helped us out during an gorta mór

I’m obsessed with genealogy and I’ve extensively mapped my ancestry. So I can name a lot of ancestors who’ve fought in a bunch of different conflicts, but mostly before 1850.
One was in an Orange militia during the 1837 Rebellion in Lower Canada. Four were British soldiers during the Napoleonic Wars, and two of those were in Highlander regiments. I have a bunch that fought Indians in America during colonial wars. A dozen or so served in American militias during the Revolutionary War. I know of one that fought for the government during the 1715 Jacobite Rising, and maybe another who died fighting for the Jacobites in 1689. A good number fought or participated in the War of the Three Kingdoms. I know of one who was a captain in the Scots Brigade in the Netherlands and probably fought during the War of Austrian Succession. I have more recent ancestors who’ve fought served in stuff like WW1 and WW2, but I don’t think they saw combat.
>>18641846
Almost everyone is descended from royalty too, at least medieval. Until recently, nobles almost always served as officers too.

I confused the plant with fart gas.

Gramps was a nazi sailor, he got bombed and died presumably a few days before the war ended. I don't know anything about my German family because my dad was Norwegian Lebensborn.
>>
>>18641827
In terms of direct paternal lineage, I have an ancestor who fought for the Confederacy in the American Civil War, an ancestor who fought for the Patriots in the American Revolutionary War, and an ancestor who fought for the Roundheads in the English Civil War. Nobody has fought in a war since the American Civil War, in terms of direct line anyway. An uncle was deployed in Vietnam at the tail end of the war but that's about it. And nobody from my direct maternal side ever fought in a war as far as my research shows. I have only researched my direct line, not any great-great-grandfathers uncles uncles cousins nephews or anything like that.
>>
At least one fought in the Civil War on the side of the Union. Great grandfather was in the Spanish American war. Grandfather was in the pacific theater of WW2 and fought at Guadalcanal. That's all I know.
>>
maternal grandfather was involved in the italian occupation of albania
paternal grandfather was in the US army in ww2, european theater
paternal great aunt was in the WACS during ww2 and remained in japan and germany throughout the late 40s and entire 50s
uncle was in vietnam, sorta messed him up

i saw my paternal great grandfather’s ww1 draft card but I dont know if he served

Yeah I actually posted his Wehrmacht medals here a few weeks ago. He died in the Lappland Campaign I believe, cause we found a pic related among his stuff. Had an Iron Cross 2nd Class (2nd Class is very generic and unimpressive for the most part, the "big deal" one is the 1st class), 1941-42 Winter Campaign medal, a Wounded Medal, and 4 years service medal.

>Sadly this means I can't say "my ancestors came here LEGALLY
I mean he still arrived in the US of A legally, he just didn't leave the Russian Empire legally.
Back then the Russian Empire demanding passports at the border was considered a gross act of tyrannical despotism funnily enough, even French ambassadors in 1914 (Louis de Robien is a fun source for this) were disgusted by that when they were entering Russia for their assignment lmao.

>it feels like half of the US population at this point has jewish in them.
If you're from the East Coast, you probably do yeah. Plenty of Jews also just Anglicized their names and converted to Christianity, so they "disappear" into the crowd.
>>
>>18641895
>remember as a kid asking if he'd wanted to be in combat and was disappointed by his assignment
Common kid experience lel. I felt similarly about my grandad being too young to fight in WW2 and only serving as a cadet overseer for Italian prisoners in Scotland (apparently his greatest "challenge" was just keeping the local women away from the Italians lmao).

He should've started his own pop music group, like that ABBA woman

If you're from the Mid-Atlantic specifically. But even then, it's not all that likely as Jews, while always having been in the US, mostly came on mass in the 20th century.

Granddad got a Medal of Honor for whatever he did in the Battle of the Bulge.

The other one was a signal man in the Pacific and told stories about the Japanese winding out the intestines of downed American pilots.

My dad's second wife's granddad died at Stalingrad.

Apparently I draw a direct line of descent on my dad's side to Stonewall fuckin Jackson. He would be absolutely furious if he found out how much of a Yankee I turned out to be.

my Grandfather who survived and recieved a serimonial katana and compass

>unless you are
Royalty was usually founded by a warlord who claimed a peace of land as their own.
>>
>>18641846
What? Until maybe the mid-1800s, royalty led their armies in the field with real risk of injury. Not too long before that, royalty actually fought in their own armies. Even longer before that, royalty were simply the leaders of armed groups.
