We're now on Day 45 of my daily US states threads in honor of the 250th anniversary of this country.

Vermont joined as the 14th state on 3/4/1791, the first state not of the original 13 colonies. Its name is French for green mountain. It has a population of 645k and is 9.6k square miles in size. Its capital is Montpelier, the least populated in the country, and its largest city is Burlington. Two presidents (Arthur, Coolidge) are from here.
The majority of the state was Abenaki territory before the coming of Whites, alongside Mohicans. Smallpox killed most of them, with the survivors mostly leaving. There are no reservations in Vermont.
First explored by Champlain in 1609, the area would remain part of New France in some form until 1763. The first permanent successful settlement was Ft. Drummer in 1724. Settlers who found New England overcrowded began to move into the area post 1763. It was claimed by New York.
In 1777 during the Revolution, Vermont proclaimed itself a republic with the goal of being admitted into the USA. The 1777 Constitution became the first in North America to ban slavery. While independent it was claimed by New York and so could not be admitted until the claim was retracted. This was negotiated in 1790 for $30k. During the Civil War, more than 15% of those sent died.
Stonecutting and granite was a major economic source for the small state. Consistently progressive-liberal, it enacted limited women's suffrage in 1880. It was the first state to introduce civil unions in 2000. Although the state with the lowest GDP, it's in the upper middle in terms of per capita. It also has the highest proportion of renewable electricity generation at 99.9%, and is one of the least religious/ethnically diverse states. It is today known for dairy, forestry, maple syrup, and wine. Half of the country's maple syrup comes from here.

What do you think of The Green Mountain State?

Boring boomer state. It has one of the oldest populations of any state.
>>
The republic period was cool, rebelled against everyone and lasted longer than Texas
Also fun to form in EU4 though it gets its national ideas from all New England

ah Vermont, the out of touch wasp faggot state.

Vermont is a moribund state with a aging, and shrinking, population. More deaths than births, more people leaving that coming to stay. The only state in the country to boast a double population deficit, the other declining states only have one or the other. The state is just plain unaffordable to live in (2nd highest homelessness rate in the country!) which drives a lot of emigration of working aged people (which Vermont is also scarce in, lowest population of working-aged adults in the country).

The depopulation that's occurring isn't evenly spread across communities, it's lopsided. It affects rural areas the worst. Young people are forced to relocate to Burlington or its suburbs to find work, or else to leave the state entirely, which accelerates the demographic collapse of the rural areas faster. Vermont will become the City State of Burlington, surrounded by lovely forest parks (formerly farms and vineyards, now reclaimed by nature as their geriatric owners died off with nobody to inherit).

thing is, it was always that way. even in the 19th century young people emigrated from the state at a high rate.

>While the stragglers were being rounded up at Winchester, Sheridan demanded re-capture of the ground lost to the Confederate counterattack. This job fell chiefly to the 8th Vermont, a veteran regiment whose Colonel Stephen Thomas had formerly been a doughface Democrat staunchly opposed to all forms of coercion against the South. Once, when Thomas was home on furlough, some of his old colleagues chided him for deserting the party. "You've changed, Stephen," they told him. A true Vermonter, Thomas replied "Fools never do."

Vermont was the first state admitted after the original 13 when the locals refused to become part of either New York or New Hampshire, which nearly came to blows over the disputed region. It was admitted as a pair along with Kentucky, setting the pattern that held until 1850 of states being admitted in free/slave pairs to preserve sectional balance.
>>
the state was famous for being highly resistant to the Democrat Party almost its entire history. it was one of two states to never vote for FDR and did not flip until LBJ's landslide in 1964, but after that it resumed voting Republican in presidential elections until 92.

NTA but the birth rates compensated for it at least previously (even if the overall growth rate between 1850 and 1960 was an anemic 2%)

The farming communities and villages are being bought as retirement communities for wealthy boomers from New York and Massachusetts. They will survive as tourist traps or elderly communities where people go to die.

it's only a blue state now because of Bernie's machine. after he dies who knows?

My home state!

I have a lot to say about it, I love it but it has many issues.
It's the most gorgeous place in the world, the greenest landscape you will ever see. The people are nice and educated. We make the best maple syrup, Quebec can suck it. We have an amazing history, technically being the first sovereign nation in the Americas to abolish slavery. Although we don't want to steal that title from the Haitians, that's about the only thing that country has going for them - it'd just be mean.

It's a tough place to live though. There's nothing to do, very few people, mostly very old. My parents are in their 60s and just about anytime they go to a function, they are one of the youngest people present.
All the youth move out as soon as they can. Or go up to Burlington, which is a stasis you go to when you've abandoned your dreams.

This.
Vermont is not a place to live, especially not as a young person.
If you don't work in education, healthcare, or a tradesman position - you will not get a career.
Our healthcare is very lacking due to the labor shortage, it sometimes feels like England with how bad the waits are. (not nearly as bad as England of course, but still bad)

Housing is a nightmare, hopefully the government will fix it. Right now our state government is in deadlock since Phil Scott has even Republican members of our state house to prevent his vetoes from being overwritten.
I have no hope that they'll ever actually fix the problem though.

>Two presidents (Arthur, Coolidge) are from here.
It is crazy how a state as small as Vermont has produced two presidents whereas much larger New Hampshire and Maine have had none, and California has only produced Nixon.
>>
>>18650057
Vermont had the highest per capita rate of fighting in the civil war of any place in the US.
I heard a legend once that during a winter lull in the fighting, a Vermonter private once nailed Robert E. Lee with a snowball right in the face.

Vermont was very staunchly anti-slavery, when the Dred Scott ruling came down, the Vermont government made it clear that it would not apply or be enforced within Vermont

Reagan was not born in California, he just had his political career there.
He was born and raised in Illinois iirc

as a person who lives here, Vermont is blue because the people are liberal.
Bernie took off because Vermonters already agreed with him.

And in general educated white people are the most progressive demographic these days.
And Vermont is one of the whitest and most educated states.
>>
>>18650624
Vermont is blue because hippies from other states moved there over the decades to become small farmers
>>
>>18651558
Vermont has always been very socially liberal.
The first time the state ever voted for a Democrat was in 1964 due to Berry Goldwater's voting against the civil rights act.
As the GOP became more and more the party of social conservativism, Vermont started to shift.
Combine this with educated, middle class whites becoming more of a democratic block, and the migration of hippies is not the whole story
>>
Vermont is the most rural state in New England (and the most hippie), also landlocked. At least Maine has coastlines eventhough it's full of trees (and botched lumber industry), eat lobsters everyday and somali migrants

there is no big corpo brands there, most are small, private household owned business. Burlington is the smallest among largest cities of each US state.

Vermont is the only state in the US without Papajohns pizza branch! imagine the isolation. New Hampshire have one, Montana have one, even Alaska & Hawaii have one! this alone is a picture on how rural countryside Vermont is compared to surrounding states
>>
>>18651558
the hippie pattern is always like that. also hippies with their hipster counterculture, flee to countryside in order to escape urban hellhole where mainstream culture reigns.
if Vermont is the hippie stronghold of New England, then Pacific Northwest is the hippie region of US, it's visible as south as Mt. Shasta in northern California.

you know they were one of only states to not ever vote for FDR right?
>>

>implying being pro-FDR is somehow the litmus test for being socially liberal
FDR was also elected by the Jim Crow South and people fucking loved him
>>
>>18652405
Yep.
Funnily enough the four states which never voted for FDR are also the four states which have banned billboards
>Vermont, Maine, Alaska, and Hawaii

>>18652190
Oh I can't believe I forgot that
>>
>>18652405
Vermont in those days was a weird libertarian state that opposed a strong Federal government so they didn't like FDR's power grab.
