What was Hong Kong like from the 1970s to the 1990s (pre-1997)?

Noisy, cramped, dirty, crime-ridden.
It's still the first two but it has made some great improvements in the latter.
>>
>>18650038
It sucked. It wasn't the neo-noir cyberpunk thriller you think, and even if it had been you would have been way too much of a loser to enjoy it.
>>
>>18650038
Extremely cramped and chaotic, high crime rate, triads ran certain parts of the city, exceptional art and culture. Cool place to visit but a terrible place to live in.
>>

Kowloon Walled City was kino, I won't tolerate this slander

The British should've never ceded control of Hong King to China.

The British should've supported the KMT you mean.

The neon lights always look impressive.

Not quite 1st world, but still better than anywhere else in asia, except maybe singapore and japan
>>
>>18650038
I was there in the 90s, although I was just a kid. Cheap and dirty would be a pretty good description. Cramped too, but that just makes it cozy when you know where the good things are at.

The agreement was that China would invade if Britain didn't leave by July 1. This is what Thatcher looked like walking out of their meeting.
>>
>>18650416
Britain was willing to recognize PRC and drop ROC as early as 1950, long before all other western nations.
>>
>>18651370
What I mean is, if they had supported the Nationalists more back in the 1930s and 1940s, they would still have to give back Hong Kong, but in far better terms.
>>
You guys know Hong Kongers and Macanese (don't know about Tsingtaoians, or any other Euro cities after the Boxer rebellion) consider themselves Chinese. They live there. They appreciate the European influence and how the cities were set up for success, and think the mainlanders are still peasants that need a few generations to catch up, but they still consider themselves Chinese.
>>
>>18651633
Only about half of Hong kongers do. The ones that don't post on reddit r/HongKong.
>>
>>18651638
Reddit is a fake place.
I'm not saying they like Red China, but they sure as hell don't consider themselves English or Portuguese.
>>
>>18651633
There are two kinds of people living in Macao.

Mestizos descended from Portuguese raping Japanese slave girls, Korean slave girls and Southeast Asian slave girls. And also mixed with untouchable Tanka people. They have Portuguese surnames and speak Portuguese. Portugal imported Japanese and Korean slaves to Macau.

Unmixed Chinese living in Macau who have regular Chinese surnames.

Most people in Hong Kong and Macau are descendants of peasants.

Hong Kong and Macau used to be rural villages inhabited by Tanka and Hakka charcoal burners.

Meanwhile there are families in mainland cities who lived in those cities for millenia or centuries.
>>
>>18650270
The entire purpose of holding Hong Kong was to trade with China to financially benefit.

Without that Hong Kong just becomes a literal burden on Britain.

Hong Kong was also entirely dependent on the mainland for its water supply because British urbanisation destroyed Hong Kong's own water supply and nature.

China could legally cut of all water and Britain would be forced to pay for massive desalination plants.

I really don't know the context and am not British. Can you explain why Maggie fell down, other than being old?
>>
>>18651633
They still LARP as completely independent and separate countries. It's very cringe but even worse is the clueless gweilo who bandwagon and validate them even though they'd be completely incapable of distinguishing a Chinaman and a "Hong Kongese".
>>
>>18651906
She collapsed walking down the stairs of the Great Hall of the People. Deng was just as old, shorter, more frail and a chain smoker, but he's never been seen falling over in public like that. Thatcher was distraught at the fact she was forced by a 4'11" Chinese man to cede the last piece of the British empire without firing a shot.

>>18651907
Envy isn't your color.
>>18651910
Sounds like the old bitch just fell. Old people do that all the time.
>>
>>18651920
Not even Donald Trump falls, and he is often sleeping on camera or rambling like a dementia patient.
>>
>>18651923
Dude just fell on the stairs of Air Force One like two months ago. Is this your entire argument? Old people don't fall?
>>
>>18651924
You also have to remember that Hong kongers are deeply superstitious Chinese, moreso than mainland since they didn't go through communism and cultural revolution etc. when they saw Thatcher fall down physically, they all believed the omen that British rule of HK was over based on that. Feng shui and all.
>>
>>18651927
Alright, I can see that. You're probably right on that account.
>>
>>18650038
My father worked there in the 80s and told me there were some very rich people and some very rich places (expensive hotels and clubs and the like, described them as "old-fashioned" rich), and then a bunch of extremely poor people crammed inside concrete slums. Some really lit-up neon areas. He went inside an apartment and it was the size of a living room with a family inside of it on bare concrete floors.

Described it as a laissez faire kind of place, very little regulation. People could go in and make a lot of money quick and then leave. There were some culture shocks like seeing hunchbacked old Chinese ladies doing menial jobs while tough looking Chinese guys stood around watching. Crowded. Lots of shops selling all kinds of stuff. You'd go into a massive mall or street full of shops and it was some guy selling buttons (just thousands of buttons), then a watch shop, then some electronics junk shop, then a phone shop, then another watch shop. Typical Asian bazaar stuff. He saw dozens of street vendors with food carts scram when a truck pulled up and 30 cops jumped out.

He saw the Kowloon Walled City but didn't go inside it, said it was a lawless place. Said he felt very safe though.

Some footage:

Dad was working in electronics manufacturing BTW. They rented out a floor of one of these 30-story towers, and something he found amusing is that the corridors were all bare concrete, but the different corporations would have nice glass doors with the logo on it (all with a similar template), and then you'd go in and there would be a Chinese receptionist sitting at a desk doing her nails. Every place was basically the same like that.
>>
>>18650038
The fact that this neon lit metropole in the 1990s was technically still "the British Empire" is so bizarre to me. It's like seeing pictures of European emperors and kings in the 1910s alongside modern automobiles and skyscrapers.
>>
>>18650270
>Start war over a city that no British person actually feels any kind of national attachment to
Utterly retarded. The British withdrawal was genuinely the smartest and best decision they could've made regarding the matter, they came out of it 'clean' and looking professional with minimal fuss. The fact that everyone there spoke Cantonese and everything is written in foreign runes also made it pretty palatable to let go of, unlike the wholly British Falklands where everyone is white, English speaking, named something like James or MacDonald, and wear cardigan pullovers while tending to their sheep.
>>
>>18651617
>but in far better terms.
How so? What better terms could they possibly ask for?
The KMT were still nationalists, they saw HK's existence under British rule as an aberration and humiliation to be avenged ASAP.
>>
>>18651633
That's the impression I get here in Australia when talking to HKers, but the Taiwanese I meet are all independence supporters nowadays.
>>
>>18651858
>There are two kinds of people living in Macao.
That's for Macau. How about Hong Kong?
>>
>>18652107
>the Taiwanese I meet are all independence supporters nowadays
Do they realize China will invade the moment Taiwan declares independence?
>>
>>18652663
I don't think a declaration of independence will be made unless china attempts to invade, and given what we have seen recently in ukraine and iran, an invasion has a high chance of disaster.

Arguably the strongest soft power in Asia.

I think Japan took off mid 90s. Before that HK had cinema, music, Bruce Lee, economical hubs, martial arts (wing tsun heydays)... I'm sure when you tell people to think a place in Asia they thought in HK instead Tokyo.
>>
>>18653479
So China always had more soft power than Japan?

It was a libertarian paradise that didn't need the government, the real reason they shut it down.

They were poor, but because they were high IQ and high trust they could build a functioning society.

>Wheres the liter
Kowloon had tons of liter, the roofs of buildings were literal garbage dumps filled with waste.
>Wheres the street shit
The wastewater from leaking toilets collected in alleyways and made them smell awful. You could only get clean water from pumps outside the city.
>>
>>18652663
Yeah they're well aware. They *wish* they could just declare independence already but they know they can't and they resent that.

By those standards the 'british empire' still exists in the form of a couple stinking caribbean islands. It's also unsurprising the last meaningful colony the British ever held was a trading outpost. It was already quickly devaluing anyway because China had opened up and began modernizing for real anyway.
>>
>>18657281
I'm convinced at least 60% of Hong Kong's prosperity was due to it being the autonomous point of contact between China and the outside world. The party more or less controled everything else, including Macau, which isn't well known today.
>>
Based on my literature review of primary historical documents (watching shaw brothers movies,) it seems like it was rife with martial arts violence
>>
>>18651633
Qingdao is by far the most European looking Chinese city. But it mostly because they kept building in the same style until maybe well into the 60s. The locals don't consider the style foreign. Beside the city never saw any major battles through out its German, KMT, and Japanese rule, so colonialism is really just looked at as changing of leadership.

Deng was a military dictator and never left his country after becoming its ruler. Are you really pretending it's surprising he was never caught falling over? You're probably just an idiot really

Lolwut? He visited Singapore Japan and America right after taking power, and these trips transformed how China saw and interacted with the world.
>>
>>18660825
Well, what did Deng Xiaoping get from those voyages?
>>
>>18660301
You will learn.
