Hispanics, Irish, Italians, and Polish were all historically Catholic and also considered 'low class', which gives the religion an affectual quality which puts some off. Secondly, the greater contact with Catholicism reveals that most Catholics are really just 'cultural Catholics' who aren't very observant at all. This is reflected in statistics which show Catholics aren't especially conservative, aren't especially reproductive, and mostly follow the modern tide instead of bucking against it the way certain Protestant denominations do.Thirdly, then, why not Protestantism? Analogous to the first point, the most conservative and active movements/denominations within Protestantism also come with low class associations.
