>>18652252Importing the slave population was like a 200 year process that was a moneymaking venture for the people doing it, not even counting the breeding once they made it over here. Sending them "back" means you're transporting even more people to Africa (people who at that point hadn't even been born in Africa or knew anything about it for almost a full generation) at a total loss to the state (Not sure how it would even be financed and carried out, hiring a private armada of transport ships? Certainly the ex-slaves couldn't afford to pay for their own resettlement) in far less time than it took to import them. It was never remotely practical.

But more importantly, why bother? The blacks didn't want to go, Lincoln had no desire to force them to go by 1864, the radical Republicans wouldn't stand for it, and there were already concerns about postwar labor shortages in the South.
