We're now on Day 46 of my daily US states threads in honor of the 250th anniversary of this country.Virginia joined as the 10th state on 6/25/1788. It is named for Elizabeth I of England, the Virgin Queen. It has a population of 8.9 Million and is 42.8k square miles in size. Its capital is Richmond and its largest city is Virginia Beach. Eight presidents are from here (Washington, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, Harrison, Tyler, Taylor, Wilson), more than any other state.Virginia was the territory of Algonquians unified under Powhatan by the time Europeans arrived. The tale of Pocahontas comes from his daughter, as told by John Smith. Most promptly died to Smallpox. The first permanent English settlement in North America, Jamestown, was founded in 1607. Tobacco dominated Virginia's early economy, resulting in a slave economy. Bacon's Rebellion in 1676 restored some of the colony's rights after a controversial 1660 Restoration. Virginia was the home of many founding fathers, and the 1781 Siege of Yorktown was the catalyst for the Treaty of Paris. The Constitution and Bill of Rights were drafted here. As the number of slaves increased cotton also became an important export. Multiple failed slave uprisings occurred, such as 1831's Nat Turner. Virginia joined the Confederacy during the Civil War. The western portion of the state, angered by this, seceded from Virginia and became West Virginia. Richmond was the capital of the Confederacy for most of its existence, and was where they surrendered following the Battle of Appomattox on 4/9/1865. African Americans became more prominent in Virginia society, but so did white supremacy. Shipbuilding became important during the world wars, and Newport News saw frequent U-Boat raids. Loving v. Virginia struck down the ban on interracial marriage in 1967, and the USA's first black governor (Douglas Wilder) was elected in 1989. Race relations have vastly improved. Virginia experienced a decades-long economic depression after the tobacco industry collapsed in the early 19th century and didn't recover until the 1850s, only for the Civil War to ruin everything.
It's a shame Virginia has become a tax-happy dive these days as it has the longest history and richest heritage of any State in America, excepting perhaps Massachusetts.
