The government modifying the constitution to effectively neuter the gun rights the constitution claimed Mexicans had is one of the worst things that happened to Mexican society.

Not only that, but history has shown that the Mexcan elites have never learned the right lessons from history. The one country that has invaded Mexico the most?

USA

And what does the military and pol;iticians use to keep the army, air force and navy atrophied and irrelevant?

>We're so close to the USA no one would ever invade us and we can't beat them anyway, it's crazy to prepare!!

Except Trump was saber rattling earlier this year and last year. If Hegseth and Trump had one or two more retards around them they might have actually been stupid enough to just start unilaterally striking targets in Mexico and maybe even launched a ground incursion. Mexico could have been Iran. Mexico got lucky. Because lord knows Losing half the country, watching limp dicked as a US army paraded around its Northern states and having its largest most economically important port straight up occupied still hasn't driven it into their thick skulls: The one country you cannot trust is the USA.

>Have a well regulated militia
>Buy/make ass tons of drones
>use tunnels, bridges and narrow cliff hugging roads everywhere
>fortify them and rig them to blow up
>make your own artillery
>make all your own ammunition including missiles and artillery shells
>make a fucking nuke
>do NOT throw yourselves at the mercy of your superpower neighbor you fucking GOONS

At least do one of these ffs. But not a single one has been implemented. Irresponsible!! CARELESS! FOOLISH!!! And they're still going about it.

>The government modifying the constitution to effectively neuter the gun rights the constitution claimed Mexicans had is one of the worst things that happened to Mexican society.

that happened in 1971 btw, before that in 1917 the right was limited to just firearms that were reserved for military use. But in 1971 the governemnt straight cut the balls off the right to own and carry firearms.
>>
>>18652045
That happened as a result of the Tlatelolco Massacre and the Halconazo, as the PRI government feared the rise of left-wing guerrillas and so did it to crack down on them
>>
>>18652040
Ffs, it's like Mexico's history is just:

>this one time, in 1848, out neighbor broke in and....did things.

And ever since it's just this fucking utter cuck. Blaming us for every goddamn thing that ever went wrong with their country. And yeah, a lot of it isn't wrong. We did some shit, invaded you more than a couple of times. We were buds with Diaz. The US made sure whoever came out on top afterwards protected US interests. And the US made damn sure your government understood that no matter how much it talked about "teh revolution", commies? Yeah no, you won't be commies. You can jack off Marx and Trotsky all you want and Pat Rivera on the back for his pretty pictures but if you had gone full red like some of you wanted Pershing would have had company. All that said, when it comes to relations between countries? There are no friends and everyone is a cooperative rival at best. It was Mexico's job to be powerful/stable enough to counter a neighbors bullshit, and they weren't. Ever.

The Cristero war is a very strange and misunderstood period. Most people I've seen talk about it are under the impression that the Mexican government tried to ban being Catholic.
Not that it matters because discussion of the conflict is confined to several breeds of obnoxious trad-cath with ocassional ripostes from communists.

I would say that, if spain hadnt broke comerce relationships with mexico, it would have been a more powerful rival to the USA than it already in the 1848 war.
FUCK SPAIN.
Those mfers treated us like shit after we got independent, while UK established commerce relationships inmediatly with the new independent USA.

Not far from the truth. Elias Calles was a hardcore jacobin that hated the Church because he considered it a "fifth column" of Rome. But he didn't really want to ban churches or the practices of rites, more like he wanted to pull a Henry VIII and to nationalize the Mexican Church and put him under his thumb.
And that was not only words, he actually help into create a new, national church with is own pope and all of that, but after he lost all powers in the next years, so did his church as well.

IT IS NOT AN «IMPRESSION»: IT IS HISTORICAL FACT.
>>
I have read that Mexico was ultimately always doomed due to its landscape; the terrain encompassing most of the country made it impossible for any real centralisation and lack of decent rivers for trade and navigation mean it all stays disconnected as fuck.

Is there any truth to this? I am fascinated by the prospect of a prosperous Mexico; not necessarily one which retains more of its northern territories but rather simply one that doesn't have such a ruinous post-independence trajectory. Was Spanish administrative autism or terrain a bigger factor in Mexico's poor fortunes, or something else?
>>
>>18652439
Not that its not impactful, but trying to attribute any nations success solely to its geography is silly and Jared Diamond-brained.
>>
>>18652439
There's plenty of nations with even worse geography that did fine
>>
>>18652442
>>18652493
I think it was more saying that the geography played a huge role due to Mexico specifically becoming independent whilst lacking infrastructure to deal with it made it a way bigger problem than it otherwise would have been. But maybe its just cope

>We were buds with Diaz
lol, you hated him because he was way too "europhile" for your tastes.

>The US made sure whoever came out on top afterwards protected US interests
lmao, you fucked way too much with mexican affairs that the most red ones ended coming on top and nationalized a lot of industries that americans controlled at that time.
>>
>>18652234
>Elias Calles was a hardcore jacobin that hated the Church because he considered it a "fifth column" of Rome.
Because they were. And had been repeatedly. Rome literally supported Mexico's invasion by a foreign power to protect the Bishop's latifundiae. And the church only dropped these meddlesome habits after V2.
>more like he wanted to pull a Henry VIII and to nationalize the Mexican Church and put him under his thumb.
No, the Mexican Apostolics were floated around as a replacement while the actual church throwing its tantrum but they were dropped the moment an actual arrangement (essentially a re-statement of the porfirist modus vivendi, btw) was reached with the institution proper. There never even was official support proper.
>>
Most of the anti-clerical laws still exist on the constitution on paper, but stopped being enforced to any degree after the 40s, and de-facto abolished in the 90s
>>
>>18652758
This is the porfirist modus vivendi I was taslking about.
>>
>>18652778
Laws in Mexico exist in a sort of social contract where the goverment won't enforce laws unless it's convenient for them, while the people won't follow laws unless it's convenient for them.

Likewise, people tolerate corruption in the goverment as long as they themselves benefit from the corruption or are allowed to steal too
>>
>>18652154

lmao
nationalism is such a mindfuck once you realize who's behind it and what it's for
protip it's literally the Freemasons behind 19th century nationalism every single time there are no exceptions especially in 1848

anyways you can't actually lump in the Mexica with all the other Nahuatl, revolutionaries just aped them specifically so they could give people a "national" identity other than "indio", "mestizo", "castizo", "criollo", and subject of Spain residence New Spain
basically this is why the LARP fest Dia de los Muertos got memed in the 30s, among other things
it's not actually Catholic what's an All Souls, lol no need for silly things like church property or priests btw just forget about the Christeros, it's definitely pure Aztec dude we're all about "indigenismo' now
here look at this Diego Rivera mural we used your taxes for with the skulls on it
aren't they cool, anyways we're going to mandate that Day of the Dead altars be put installed in your public schools now
now we're going to pour a bunch of concrete over the Pyramid of the Sun kek that's definitely how it's supposed to look
>>
>>18653534
>anyways you can't actually lump in the Mexica with all the other Nahuatl
Half of the country don't even give a fuck about anything Nahuatl, to being with.

>basically this is why the LARP fest Dia de los Muertos got memed in the 30s
In my city the Dia de Muertos larp started in the 90s, and it was ordered by the federal government, because no one wanted that shit here. Well, they still don't want it.
>>
>>18653643
well yeah I mean government sponsored culture is always going to be like that
you've got your true believers who will just accept what they are supposed to, and then everyone else who mostly keep their heads down and go along with it so they don't attract attention

anyways Nahuatl is a real language group so clearly the people who still actually speak it do care to some extent
but all these dudes latching onto their culture as a way of legitimizing their state or building some kind of artificial ethnic identity, it's just strange to me as a norteno, maybe it shouldn't be cause my own country has a history of that too
>>
>>18653663
The Mexican goverment likes to promote the Aztec larp because they were the imperial indios with a "prestigious" lineage and to legitimize a central ruling authority centered in Mexico city. All the other indios are forgotten about except the Mayas (who actually resisted well into the 1800s) because they don't fit into the narrative.
>>
>>18653668
>they were the imperial indios with a "prestigious" lineage

Doubtful. But I don't really know too much about it
The actual Aztecs were mostly wiped out IIRC, indigenous Mexicans mostly descend from the people that allied against them with the Spanish.

>legitimize a central ruling authority centered in Mexico city
Yes.
That is the reason for sure.

>the other indios are forgotten about except the Mayas
I'll take your word for it, but that tracks.
>>
>>18653668
>the other indios are forgotten about except the Mayas
>>18653670
>that tracks.
Idk how much is that and how much it's that the Spanish wrote tons about the Aztecs. And the Aztecs have the benefit of having been wiped out and beaten, they have the underdog and lost cause romanticism credentials going for them, just look at what that did for the confederates. Everyone else were various shades of collaborationist until it was their turn.

Then there's the Purepechas
>>
>>18653681
And then if you really think about it, imagine how much of a bitch it would be to learn about every individual city-state and what happened there. It'd be like every American kid learning the differences between every one of the 13 colonies. Technically you *can* and there is material there for sure, but would you really want to?? Does it actually add anything?
>>
>>18653643
It’s hilarious how everyone here in the states, even the other Hispanics just seem to believe that all Mexicans south of the Rio Grande love that Día de los Muertos BS. Didn’t know was state mandated crap for a lot of Mexicans for PR’s sake; then again, PRI were up to crazier shit in the day.

>>
>>18653685
It's not though, that's the point.

Yeah there is a lot of Aztec wank and pseuds point it out whenever they can. But honestly unless you are majoring in that or it's a subject of personal interest and hobby there really isn't much that it actually adds to an education or even rounding out cultural understanding. I put in an example of learning the intricate differences between the 13 colonies circa independence. Technically you can in fact do that and it would be an endeavor that could be fruitful if its a subject your particularly interested in. But it's not like it would significantly add to the education of every student if they went over that for a couple of semesters in HS.
>>
>>18653684
The PRI built all of modern Mexico (economically, culturally, politically) for better or for worse
>>
>>18653691
>the intricate differences between the 13 colonies circa independence
Overblown, and off topic.

You might have read Albion's Seed, but I haven't and reckon that's a pretty good overview of the culture relating to the ECW but oversimplifies what people really fought about.

Like, until you're really ready to wrangle with Charles II and his subsequents, including Washington himself who descended from staunch Royalists, you'll never grasp the situation these colonies (each of whom had independent legislatures, independence from parliament) found themselves in when p**l**m*nt overstepped their prerogatives regarding crown lands.

>HS
They lie to their students.

First tier will always be Aztecs and Mayans, hands down.
In second tier, there are the, Purepechas, Mixtecas, Otomies and Tarascans.
Then, the Tarahumaras/Raramuris (although these ones have become quite popular lately), Mayos and Yaquis.
Then everyone else, especially the forgotten northern tribes like the Seris, which funnily enough have more in common with the "red skins" of the north than everyone else in the rest of Mexico.

Díaz was scum. Cananea masacre, mayan & yaqui slavery, massive political represión, giving all the land to foreigners. Literally nobody likes him here except some very deluded people

u mean the people that didnt recognized themselves as members of mexico and instead identified with their respective tribes (and infact mayans revolt against the mexican state and did a genocide of yucatec indios ladinos, mestizos and criollos) Yeah man, no wonder why those savages got fucked up.
That aside, Diaz, as well as Juarez and the whole liberal party did so much for mexico, they modernized its education system, started industrializing the country and erradicated the estamental society inherited by the vicerroyalty that conservatives wanted to keep.

>inb4 Juarista
Nah, fuck Juarez as well. He was also another retard. Both were from Oaxaca, so they probably had more or less the same mindset.
Also, fun fact, even when Porfirio fans today usually crap on Juarez, it was Porfirio Diaz himself the one who created the Benito Juarez personality cult that persist to this day because he really admired him as a person.
>>
>>18655398
Yeah, despite what chairos and derechairos argue, both Diaz and Juarez were members of the same liberal party, and both sought out to modernize and introduce capitalism to Mexico, not matter the cost. Many of Diaz's policies were continuation of Juarez's, and many of the things that Diaz would be blamed for, were also done by Juarez, such as reelectionism.

In this case it's true in three different ways though.
>Without demand from the U.S here would be no illicit good for organized crime to profitably trade, avoiding this problem.
>Without the tacit support of certain organs of the U.S government, cocaine trade would be much weaker than it is today. Thus easier to dismantle
>Without the war on drugs and the constant decapitations, organized crime would have already coalesced into a single syndicate (likely in the auspices of the government), dramatically reducing violence.
In decreasing degree of importance, the third point being the least.
>>
>>18657333
Our discussion of course limited to no further than 2001 :)

But as as a &humanities note: the current trend of the Mexican drug war is IMO a return to an older system of government hegemony over organized crime disguised as the long awaited marvel movie fantasy of criminal genocide ala Nayib Bukele.
>>
>>18652078
My ancestors fought in that war. It is greatly romanticized but I met my cristero great grandfather when I was a kid and let me tell you he was a very terrifying man. Like he didn't belong outside the 19th century.

Alamán was an odd duck among the conservatives: pessimist by nature, he thought the independence was a borderline mistake. He tried to kickstart industrialization in Mexico in the 1840s and promote economic autarky. He is unique even among the conservatards.
>>

While true the response to US demand is still something that needs to be owned by Mexico and Mexican society. Without the will and motivated perseverance of Mexican political society to in fact have Mexico be a successful country, a powerful country, and able to be on par with the United States and if not completely equal at least sovereign and robust enough to give it pause for thought for the time being, then you surrender to corruption and pilfering.

I've heard it in their rhetoric, their calls for action. "I will make jobs! end corruption! Make the market basket affordable!!"

It's survival, a get-by mindset. No "Fuck the Guatemalans, we're going in and nailing their barbaric mayan genociding asses to the walls of every building around their "Plaza de Constitucion!" Why? Because we're Mexicans, WE'RE THE GOOD GUYS." Lived there off and on for +/- 12 years, never heard anything like that, not once...Not from a politician. Heard it from a gangster though. Mexico doesn't believe in itself, hell Mexicans don't believe in Mexico. Your rights are turned into suggestions and government issued permissions so easily that anyone actually feigning admiration for you constitution is deluded or actively lying. The Constitution is basically a list of stuff the Government would like to be true and other stuff they allow to make people feel like they aren't disposable overlooked pawns. You can't have civic nationalism like that. You can't have empire like that. You can't actually matter like that. And yet Mexico does matter, culturally, economically, internationally it has a voice It just happens to sound rather neutered and non-confrontational.

You got what we let you. Y'all never believed you deserved more.

Legalize drugs, regulate the fuck out of it, stomp out the cartels. Pay Americans to smuggle it into the USA and have them start American Cartels and destabilize the SW. Could have done it. Didn't. Too busy surviving.

Yeah, the PRI was called the Perfect Dictatorship precisely because they actually managed to legitimize themselves on the world stage and adquire serious intellectual prestige. Whereas the rest of Latin America was dealing with constant coups, civil wars, revolutions, juntas, dictatorships and guerrillas during the cold war, Mexico seemed like a beacon of stability, an economic success story and a mature and respected democracy, all while also parading as a hero of the third world and friend of the cuban revolution.

The PRI could massacre students in public broadlight, and afterwards host some of the most famous sport events in history ('68 Olympics, 1970 and 1986 World Cups)
>>
>>18658702
>Alamán was an odd duck among the conservatives: pessimist by nature, he thought the independence was a borderline mistake.
He didn't hate the independence per se but the way in which was achieved. He despised the first independentists for their violent ways. I remember reading his family also lost properties and I think even some of his family members in one of the attacks Allende and Hidalgo did in their early campaigns, so I am not surprised he had zero love for those kind of characters. For him, independence should have been a "top from bottom" event, not a "semi-proletariat revolution" one, like they did.
And in a way, he was right. After all Iturbide was the one who finished the independence movement and that was thanks to his political maneuvering skills, in a bloodless event, and in a better shape than any of the former independentist leaders. For Alaman, Iturbide was the perfect leader, while the former ones were just "brute savages".

>He is unique even among the conservatards.
He was far from the only one, but the
Conservatives basically sucked at fighting and that was how you won the "elections" at that time. They basically had the 'brains" but not the "brawls".
The Conservatives also had their own economic plans outside rising taxes and expropriating lands and resources from the Church, which was what the Liberals usually did.

>>18652040
Mexico keeps its military weak because the politicians are scared a general might seize power. It wants its people disarmed so a charismatic populist can't use them to seize power. It's not an unreasonable fear given how often these things happened in Mexican history.
>>
>>18652040
You make the mistake of thinking the ruling class wants a prosperous, strong, and self-reliant Mexico. They don't. They want to get rich and fat working as resource extractors for the Americans. Many outright having the ultimate goal (whether for themselves or their descendants) of buying their way into the American ruling class and emigrating there. A strong military would directly threaten their position as American Overseers. As >>18659715 mentioned a strong military is one that could overthrow them.
>>
>>18659768
>>18659715
Also that the revolution destroyed the Military as an independent actor.
Originally it was one of the building blocks of the PNR/PMR coalition under Calles and Cardenas, but once the revolutionaries decided to transition to civilian rule under Miguel Aleman, they got removed as a sector during the PRI reformation and ever since they just exist to collect paychecks.

>>
>>18659768
>a strong military is one that could overthrow them.

Just objectively not true. The Mexican military is far stronger already than any cartel or cartel alliance and plainly a meritocracy. It also already has more than enough firepower to put down any mob. A military, even one armed with weapons from the 20's, is entirely capable of overthrowing its own government and arrives to the party far more organized and better equipped than any populist mob. The calling cards of a government that fears its military isn't outdated equipment or obsolete combat doctrine. It's over-compartmentalization, an insistence on centralized command with little to no trust/authority given to field officers, carousel-like rotation of all command personnel forever, and an almost complete lack of true merit in the command structure with nepotism and loyalty to the state being the only qualifications for promotion.

Mexico afaik currently shows none of these except for maybe the last one partially with nepotism still being a fast track to promotion though I assume complete morons and sycophants still need **some** merit to hold any prestigious command.

I forgot: There's also another thing you tend to see, you almost always see redundant military organizations and a tendency to have serious rivalries between branches. Sometimes you'll even see silly things like a country having an Army, and a Super army, and a Super Duper Army, Which are all commanded by different people who usually hate each other and they're all spying on one another which also tends to lend itself to there being multiple espionage agencies all trying to weed out any dissent and find a reason to kill someone important.

What I'm trying to convey is that the Mexican military isn't kept weak because the Government is threatened by them. That idea makes no sense if you actually look at the Mexican military sisce its already competent enough and armed enough to destroy the government several times over if someone in it with authority wanted to. It's kept weak because either; the USA is threatened by a modern military force on its southern border that is capable of inflicting noticeable damage to US population centers and has influenced the right people to keep the Mexican military outdated and obsolete OR The Mexican government is filled with politicians that are just kind of incompetent with misplaced priorities.

I bet I know which one Mexicans think is true.

Huerta was a hero that wanted to keep Mexico in the good way, i.e , the porfirian way.
He was also the first president that wanted to nationalize oil, but because of this promise the USA goverment threaten him that if he didnt resign Mexico would get invaded.

lmao, what? But Huerta was the one who was put by the President William Taft via his ambassador Henri Lane Wilson.
Madero was the one who was seen as a risk to American interests, thus the reason why Huerta had the "green light" to coup him without major repercussions.

Yes what many fail to mention is that these disorganized rebel bands were often full of local men with private grudges against many other landowners who had nothing to do with the war. They regularly sacked their homes and murdered people they didn't like while using the fog of war to cover it up.

The Profiriatio was famously plagued by open rebellion lol.

I still don't know why all schools in Mexico skip the New Spain era. That's literally when the ethos or "spirit" of the country was formed.
Also like 90% of the things that are happening right now in the country could be explained by events that happened back then.

Because as far as the official mexican state ideology is concerned, the only relevant parts were the conquest and independence (oh, and Sor Juana Inez).

You fail to see how the two are connected. Yes the military is "strong" enough to overthrow the government (The secret is that even the most podunk military could kill the rulers of most countries), but they are "weak" enough that they could not really gain any sort of legitimacy with the rest of the country, and to do so would invite the coup leaders to be killed by the US to reinstall an American compliant government. Thus the military is kept "weak enough" both militarily and ideologically, that it would never consider overthrowing the government simply out of knowing what America would do. A "strong" military would be one that could theoretically actually hold the country, and not be wiped out by the Americans in under a week. But as stated before, the Mexican ruling class doesn't want to do that, they don't want to be Cuba or Iran "fighting the good fight" and suffering for self-autonomy. They want to get rich doing what daddy America says.

Rampant corruption? Well, yeah

No it wasn't retard. New Spain was entirely different in terms of demographics and law. The average subject back then wasn't even mestizo. It's was like 90% Indian and the rest a minority of Spaniards.

In 1810 indigenous were around 60%

Not even close. You are underestimating how many natives died by the plagues and also how many Spaniards went to the New World.
