Why was she the heiress? Because John of Aragon, her brother, died shortly after marrying and could not ascend the throne; because her older sister, Isabella, married the King of Portugal (and also died young); and because her younger sister, Catherine of Aragon, could not ascend the throne while Joanna was alive, and instead married Henry VIII of England.
