Probably not, the elephant in the room was always Serb and Croat nationalism and the fact that these identities were too engrained and strong to just brush under the carpet. Similar as they maybe, they're still different. Everyone forgets that even peaceful and civilized Scandinavians avoided this kind of chimpout by having Norway and Sweden amicably separate in 1905 after years of Norwegian agitation against the union with Sweden.
