I just read this book and it made me understand Religion
The main function of Religion in history was promoting pro-social, pro-group behaviour

For example, in the Dark Ages, tons of people died from STD's
So Christianity said free sex was immoral, and the Christian societies became stronger, out-conquering the pagan and atheist societies
This is the true high-IQ take
It doesn't MATTER if "God is real or not", what matters is the BEHAVIOURS that Religion promotes
A good Religion promotes evolutionary adaptive behaviour, and makes any group that practice it stronger

This is why Europeans are getting outbred and conquered by Islam today, Islam promotes fertility and patriarchy, while secular European nations promote degeneracy
