Historically, there was a subtle social expectation that elderly were expected to kill themselves in some way usually by drowning. It was unconsidered disrespectful and violation of one's obligations to one's familiy if an elderly person cost too much resources. However, Buddhism as understood in Japan rejected suicide. Buddhist precepts, of the lay level, regarded intentionally taking life, including one’s own, as morally problematic because could produce negative karma. This limited often suicides actually. However, if you were poor, the above expectation would sometimes still happen. Same with some women who would kill themselves out of grief for the loss of their children or from the perception that that they woul d have to remarry after the death of the husband due to economic hardship.
Dishonorable suicides, such as by a huband with family or young person were seen as highly dishonorable and seen to reflect negatively on their family. If an elite family it had elite connotations. Suicides done out of some religious belief were seen as a type of prideful behavior that violated the above Buddhist precept.
