We're now on Day 48 of my daily US states threads in honor of the 250th anniversary of this country.West Virginia joined as the 35th state on 6/20/1863. It has a population of 1.8 Million and is 24.2k square miles in size. Its capital and largest city is Charleston.Prior to statehood the land was an area of conflict during the Beaver Wars of the 17th century, and the land was primarily inhabited by the Iroquois. Europeans first explored the area in 1671, reaching Kanawha Falls. New Mecklenburg, present day Shepherdstown, became the first settlement in 1725. Both Pennsylvania and Virginia claimed it as territory before it eventually went to Virginia. Some settlers attempted to have Congress create a new territory called Westsylvania, though this did not succeed. The English also attempted to settle the area as a 14th colony named Vandalia, though this too didn't go through. West Virginia was born from the Civil War when pro-Union inhabitants of northern/western Virginia became angry at the pro-Confederate government of Richmond. An alternate government was set up in 1861 under Francis Pierpont called the Restored Government. They voted to separate from Virginia, and remain so to this day. Prior to separation, the two portions of the state had long had many differences and separation had been talked about for some time. The Union gained early control of West Viriginia with the Battle of Rich Mountain in 1861. Mining became the crux of West Virginia's economy. Calcium Nitrate, limestone, coal, and salt were some of the primary minerals. Railroad development and strategic location allowed the state to take advantage of its resources. However, labor strife also followed due to issues with working conditions, safety, and economic disparity. Some of these issues remain in West Virginia today, which is still relatively dependent on mining.What do you think of The Mountain State?
