It’s understandable why Gemistos Plethon wanted to restore Hellenic paganism. Byzantium by that time was a complete dumpster fire and he wanted to dissociate from it as much as possible, so it makes sense he’d look towards the “glorious past” and decide his country needed a cultural and political reboot based on that past.

It all sort of worked with the early successes of the independent Greek state but I wonder how it'll fare when the country continues to underperform.
