We're now on Day 49 of my daily US states threads in honor of the 250th anniversary of this country.Wisconsin joined as the 30th state on 5/29/1848. Its name is derived from a slightly unclear Algonquian word, which may come from the Miami word meskonsing (it lies red). It may also come from the Menominee word weskohsaeh (good place). It has a population of 6 Million and is 65.5k square miles in size. Its capital is Madison and its largest city is Milwaukee.During the first millennia, the state was the home of the Effigy Mound culture. It later became home of both the Mississippian and Oneota cultures, and finally groups such as the Ojibwe, Sauk, Meskwaki, and Kickapoo. Jean Nicolet was the first European to arrive in 1634, coming ashore at Green Bay. Fur was traded for some time between the French and Natives. Green Bay later became the first settlement in 1745, and truly began at Prairie du Chien in 1781. Under the USA, the economy shifted from fur to lead. The number of miners who arrived and often lived in holes in the ground earned the state its nickname. The influx of miners led to the Winnebago War of 1827 and the Black Hawk War of 1832. The latter led to the expulsion of Native Americans from Wisconsin. The Erie Canal opening continued to grow the territory. Infrastructure was steadily improved after becoming a state. Wisconsin became a center of abolitionism, especially after the 1854 Joshua Glover incident. During the Civil War, the 2nd, 6th, and 7th became known as the Iron Brigade. After the war the economy shifted again to agriculture in the south and lumber in the north. It later transitioned once more to dairy, for which the state is famous for.
