At one point the US planned to station nuclear weapons on Taiwan, but I doubt the Taiwanese would've ever had the capability to make nuclear weapons themselves for most of the Cold War. I think a lot of people don't know or forget the fact that most of East Asia was dirt poor and underdeveloped until the last quarter of the 20th century.
