It's easier to understand when you realize that Yahweh is actually a normal god from an old pantheon, and his dominion is that of domination, obedience, and control. Everything christians have ever done has been about controlling other people, even to the point that they stopped the stonings and executions in order to appease mortals with more power to dominate than them (lawmakers, the fabulously wealthy, etc)
