An identity based on atheism is an identity based on negation. How healthy is this in the long.term? It reminds me of the identities in the Balkans were people are defined by what they aren't, and we all know how that went.
>>18663114Isn't all identity in general based on negation?
>>18663114The vast majority of young people in the West are atheist isn't just limited to Reddit, the religious "revival" is an astroturfed myth
>>18663120what exactly would I negate if I identified as a Provencal baker?
isn't it similar to veganism, as in I don't eat this or I don't eat that? it's fine to be selective, but basing an identity is something else
>>18663135People who aren't Provencal bakers
AH yes I should base my identity off the jewish god YHWH instead.
>>18663147haha
>>18663114Not very. Which is why very few people identify as atheist, and not usually for very long. I for example identify as a white (german, european) nationalist who happens to be atheist.
>>18663114any identity based around a negative is a mistake. Basing yourself on an empty hole or worse, against something, simply defines you as the thing while a fool would think of it as the ultimate escape. With the youtube atheist movement, I think this was mainly just juvenile rebellion. The reality is that for all the educated people at the top like Dawkins or Hitchens, the bulk of that movement was the opposite. It was mainly middle to working class white kids who grew up in small towns surrounded by kind of dim witted hicks who were very religious in the 2000s. These kids were midwits at best and rejected everything about these people.
>>18663201People give the New Atheist movement too much credit in spreading atheism. Secularization mostly arrived as a consequence of technology and comfy 21st century lifestyle.
Any identity is a mistake. Identities are for people too weak to let their works and deeds speak for themselves. That's why the strongest need for identity always manifests among the biggest losers of every kind (e.g. gender-obsessed people on the left, nation- and race-obsessed people on the right -- both types of people who have nothing to show for themselves, so they have to larp as an identity instead).
>>18663230>That's why the strongest need for identity always manifests among the biggest losers of every kindDo you have any proof for this? And what do you mean by "losers"?
>>18663114Isn't that why they created "Atheism+" and half of them became social justice warriors?
>>18663114Atheism as a movement is pretty much dead outside of this boardEven on reddit, the home of obnoxious atheistic autism, it's pretty much exclusive to the r/atheism board and the losers who still post there like it's 2015In real life nobody cares. The big names of nu-atheism (Hichens, Dawkins) are has-been nobodies. People in most of the developed world are not religious in the traditional sense, but they are not atheists. They simply don't care too much.Yet this board is full of the kind of person one would find on comment sections from 2005-2015. It's like a time capsule for outdated anti-religious autism
>>18663251>Yet this board is full of the kind of person one would find on comment sections from 2005-2015. It's like a time capsule for outdated anti-religious autismI keep wondering why this is the case. Like why this board in particular has constant religious debates.
>>18663121The majority of people in the west are neither religious nor atheist, they believe in a vibes-based idea of god and have loose spiritual beliefs. Also that christians are heckin chuds, but atheists are giga sperg incels.
>>18663114What a reach comparing atheism to the breakup of Yugoslavia lmaoChristfags are not sending their best.>>18663210Secularism rose with internet access, and people could be introduced to new ideas besides what Pastor McNuggets or the local Pedo in Robe told them.>>18663230Idiotic pseudo intellectual drivel
>>18663257>The majority of people in the west are neither religious nor atheist, they believe in a vibes-based idea of god and have loose spiritual beliefsNot even that, I think most just don't care about this topic at all
>>18663272They do not, but when asked, at best only around 10% will say they are atheist. If you lump them with the people who answer "agnostic", you get 20% of the EU population. I get the feeling that the atheists who spam this board don't really go outside or interact with the average person very much if they think the average normie is committed to atheism just because they don't go to church and dont give a shit about christian morality
>christfags are just making up arguments for atheists now
>>18663114atheism isn't "negation", it's a lack of interest in the question of religion itself due to a lack of proof. antitheism is the negative you're looking for, and no, it's not healthy to base your identity on proactively seeking out arguments and confrontation either for or against whatever thing you believe.
>>18663251>>18663255It's no more then ten underage idiots spamming thread continuously
>>18663114>An identity based on atheism is an identity based on negationYou mean, apophatic?https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apophatic_theology
>>18663308Apophatic is a manner of description. A human being being shaped by opposing rather than proposing is far beyond that.
>>18663251nobody cares anymore because everyone is an atheist now. it's why the "new" thing is theists trying to recruit the youth away from atheism and back into their cults.
>>18663322That’s why things like Godjak posting are so important. We need to win hearts and minds of the youth and memes mocking how ridiculous religion is will help with that.
>>18663255My impression has been that several boards were subjected to an artificial (involving literal paid shills) attempt to promote a Christian revival here by spamming, and in response there was a partly organic and partly artificial attempt to shut it down by counter-spamming.
>>18663322>Everyone is an atheist nowEven in the EU actual atheists are a tiny minority. See>>18663284
>>18663257>>18663272>>186632841 I specifically said YOUNG people not just people in general 2 It is dying that's just a fact there are numerous articles debuking the myth3 The vast majority of atheist in the real world don't make atheism their entire personality they simply don't care about religion
>>18663334Among millennials and gen Z they are
>>18663327I think kids are far more influenced with muslim rape epidemic and seeing atheists turning a blind eye. the europe might not be getting more christian, but it is getting more crusady
https://www.keithwoods.com/p/secularism-is-here-to-stay
>>18663348That’s your fellow religious retards doing the rapes and it’s bleeding heart christfags who want to import thirdies
>>18663320>A human being being shaped by opposing rather than proposing isis doing precisely what Via Negativa is supposed to do. Opposing any positive description = proposing that God is *not*.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apophatic_theology#Western_Christianity" The 9th-century theologian John Scotus Erigena wrote:We do not know what God is. God Himself does not know what He is because He is not anything [i.e., "not any created thing"]. Literally God *is not*, because He transcends being.[80]"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Scotus_Eriugena#Modes_of_non-being"Non-being as the ineffable Godhead: All that by reason of the excellence of its nature (per excellentiam suae naturae) escapes the reach of the senses and of the intellect. The essence of all things belongs to this category. Whatever is known is a kind of accident of the underlying, unknown and unknowable substance. We know anything by quality and quantity, form, matter, difference, time and space.[45] But the essence of it, to which these attach themselves, we cannot know. Since this essence cannot be known by us, it does not exist for us."
>>18663359And if we were merely discussing descriptions of identity, you'd be completely right. But the problem discussed in this thread isn't how an identity is described. It's that the identity is an inverse of some other. It's a lack of participation rather than participation, regardless of how it's described.
>>18663257>they believe in a vibes-based idea of god and have loose spiritual beliefsthats 99.9999% of all people. they only take vague positions from the religion they "hold" without knowing nor caring much about what it actually says.
>>18663251atheism isnt the topic in society anymore because1. atheism as a term has essentially merged with agnosticism and general non-care for religion2. most people are now that.
>>18663369>1. atheism is irreligionProbably the only way atheists can maintain the illusion that they're significantly growing.
>>18663372you can ask anyone who is atheist and you will see, they all essentially mean "i dont think 100% there is no god period, i just dont believe in a god."
>>18663378Which is different from irreligious people, who mostly do believe in god in one way or another.
>>18663382most people believing that there's "probably something more out there" and living a normal life and "atheists" living a normal life while "not beliving in any of the gods" is basically the same end-result of a position when it comes to outcomes in those peoples lives, they are all essentially not following any of the known/official religions. so "religion" in the sense of christianity/islam/judaism/buddism etc are all slowly failing, beyond in specific regions where you are heavily pressured/indoctrinated by environment and family to be of that religion.
>>18663251>This board is full of people stuck in 2005-2015I say the same with people from /pol/ but stuck in 2014-2016 in that that board is obsessed with how many white people are in a certain area (North America, Europe, and Australia) instead of a serious study on what created "the West" and how that can survive with newer technologies and by teaching younger generations those ideas and how to transfer those ideas to future generations
>>18663114>everyone around me eats feces>"I identify as someone who does not eat feces.">THAT'S UNHEALTHY!!!!Okay feces eater.
>>18663396>same end-resultIf we shift to behavioral evaluation then half of surveyed demographic differences disappear, especially belief-based ones. A solipsist, an empiricist and a postmodernist are suddenly indistinguishable. I don't see the benefit in doing that. The difference might seem small to you, but people who identify themselves specifically as "atheists" are a pretty niche demographic group in my experience. And I wouldn't find it wise or insightful to conflate them with the irreligious in general, since the latter at times includes literal professional shamans. It's like saying vegans are and 'people on a diet' are basically one big family. They probably all put their pants on the same way but there are differences that are worth noting.
>>18663421i dont mind there always being more specificity in data, im just saying ultimately the specific known religions are done and on their way out ultimately.
>>18663251>Atheism as a movement is pretty much dead two them literally died
All this nonsense comes of as incredibly defensive
Monotheism is based on negation of all pagan gods, thoughbeitever.
>>18663251>not religious in the traditional sense, but they are not atheists. They simply don't care too much. That's a big cope.
