We've finished all 50 US States, but there's still a few more spots I wanna make threads for. This is 3 of 6.

Guam is an unincorporated organized territory of the USA and the southernmost of the Mariana Islands. The island's name by the native Chamorro is Guahan, from the word Guaha, meaning "to have." It was originally part of the Spanish East Indies before being ceded through the 1898 Treaty of Paris on 12/10/1898. It has a population of 169k and is 210 square miles in size. Its capital is Hagatna and its largest city is Dededo.
The Chamorro first arrived on Guam around 1500 BCE. The Spanish first sighted the island in 1521 and claimed it in 1565. It and the Marianas were the only Spanish outposts east of the Philippines in the Pacific Ocean. The Spanish-Chamorro Wars were fought in the latter half of the 17th century over issues with colonization and Jesuit missionaries. The Chamorro population dropped from over 50k to less than 5k by the 18th century due to warfare and disease.
Guam served as a station for Americans going to the Philippines. The Commercial Pacific Cable Company built a telegraph station for the first trans-Pacific communications cable here in 1903. During WW1, the SMS Cormoran ran out of coal and sought refuge at Apra Harbor. The USA, then neutral, interned the crew until 1917 when they became POWs. The Germans proceeded to blow up the ship, the first violent action against the USA in WW1.
The Battle of Guam was fought in 1941 when Japan invaded. They won and occupied it for 31 months, during which the Chamorro were brutalized. 10% of the population died during the war. The 1944 Battle of Guam liberated the territory. In 1969 Guam rejected a unification with the Northern Mariana Islands. Today, statehood remains a popular topic of discussion, and the territory is reliant on tourism for its economy. The native Chamorro are the ethnic majority of Guam.

What do you think of the Tano y Chamoru?

I know someone in the army who was stationed there and they described it as hell on Earth. So I take their word for it. Never hear about anyone going there for reasons unrelated to the military.

Really? What was so bad about it? It's humid and hot but that's the case for all jungle island places. There's nice beaches, nature, a marine park, a cool museum, neat little villages...

Just applied for a couple of government attorney jobs out there, one with the navy and one with DOJ. No idea what the applicant pool looks like but it would be cool to move there if I do get a job. Been reading up a lot lately on the legal status of the territories, the lack of representation is really unfair. The fact that the supreme court hasn't overturned the insular cases is a disgrace.

I still laugh about this retarded congressman who during a hearing about a military base expansion on guam asked one of the dumbest questions in congressional history.

Literally feels like an idiocracy deleted scene.

Hank Johnson, Democrat, Representative of Georgia's 4th district since 2007.
He claimed he was being facetious but I think that was just an excuse

There’s just nothing to do there it’s very boring and expensive. It’s a 7 hour flight just to get to Hawaii.

Only 1 hour flight to the philipines and 2 hours to japan though. Doesn't seem that boring to me with all the beaches and hiking, and a downtown with bars and nightmarkets and stuff. But I've never actually been there.

I think the heat and the insects might be difficult for me though. I hear its like being in southern florida.

If you’re deployed you aren’t going to be able to go to either of those places.
