Sigismund was the King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania, while Barbara was a beautiful noblewoman from the powerful Lithuanian Radziwill family. The two fell in love in Vilnius and, knowing that a marriage between a king and a non-royal woman was politically forbidden, they secretly married in 1547.When the marriage was exposed, it triggered a massive political crisis. Sigismund’s mother, Queen Bona Sforza, and the Polish nobility fiercely demanded a divorce, fearing the Radziwill family would seize control of the state. However, Sigismund refused to back down, even threatening to give up his throne, and successfully had Barbara crowned Queen in 1550.Their triumph was tragically short-lived. Just five months after her coronation, Barbara died of a painful illness (likely cancer, though rumors blamed her mother-in-law for poisoning her). Fulfilling her final wish to be buried in her homeland, a devastated Sigismund walked on foot behind her coffin all the way from Kraków to Vilnius, where she was laid to rest in Vilnius Cathedral.
