The Turks had witnessed 100 years of European powers using Christian minorities as a means to undermine Ottoman territorial integrity then ethnically cleanse/slaughter Turks and related Muslim populations in former Ottoman territories in the Balkans, Caucasus, Crimea, etc. The estimates for Muslim victims of Christian atrocities in those regions ultimately go as high as 5.5 million people.The European powers from Balta Liman onwards had also used Christian minorities to effectively dismantle the Ottoman economy (the Ottomans were more industrialised at the end of the 1700s than they were at the end of the 1800s) and installed them at the head of preferential trade networks. As a result, the Ottomans had an overwhelmingly Christian merchant class with the vast majority of Turks reduced to an underclass role in an agrarian economy. The Ottomans had effectively been economically colonised and impoverished and the Armenian population had benefitted greatly from collaborating in that colonisation.The existence of Russian and British-armed Armenian militias (most notably the Dashnak's fedayi units) waiting to rise up and strike at the Turks is also well documented at this time as is the presence of many Armenian volunteer units in the ranks of the Russian army.All of this isn't to justify the Armenian Genocide. What happened was undoubtedly a tragic and horrific crime against humanity. But the Turks didn't do it because they just one day decided to create a nation state. There's a lot of misery, exploitation and bloodshed leading up to that point.
