What made Russia, until then characterized as the Chud Central of Europe with a culture of mostly provincial farmers, become the hotbed of left wing radicalism and revolution in 1917?I know they were getting wrecked in the war, food riots were happening, inflation was out of control, etc... but given how all these factors affected most nations during the war in some form, why did it kick off and explode in Russia? Fucking France had a whole century of revolts and the Commune or 1871, yet they barely had anything worse than rioting at most in the 1910s

>>18665854People like to project a lot of stuff onto the USSR from the outside, so you get people saying that the Soviets were in effect aristocrats of the spirit who worked on space ships and not that the average Soviet male spent 2-3 years in the army, probably time in jail, worked manual jobs and spoke interspersing his speech with slurs in addition to having a drinking problem.
Despotic rule, serfdom and the constant encroachment of foreign companies buying up all of their mines and land. They wanted to enact political change but the people with the power to enact liberal reform where in the desotic class the reforms they needed would never come to fuition until they seized the state for themselves. This is why democratic socialist lost to the communists.
