How the fuck did actual communist terrorists become rehabilitated and gifted such prominent positions within the american university system?
Cause they thought it's cool and edgyDems also almost installed a neo nazi as a governor in Maine but screeching women ended up being more powerful
>>18665799>howUSA education overrun by leftists
>>18665799>Due to the illegal tactics of FBI agents involved with the program, including conducting wiretaps and property searches without warrants, government attorneys requested all weapons-related and bomb-related charges be dropped against the Weather Underground, including charges against Ayers.
>>18665825Legalism at it's finest, what a fucking joke lol.
>>18665825FDR wanted a secret police. Boom. Hoover.
>>18665799I wonder if you could get the few good-faith libs left to support more radical crackdowns on our public institutions if they knew just how corrupted they are.
>>18665883It'd have to be a movement, akin to the abolitionists. Upending a century and more of this?
Because they were doing what the deep state wanted.
>>18665799Plea deals essentially, they came to be controlled by fed handlers and become controlled opposition in exchange for avoiding life sentences.
>>18665831yes, some countries actually have rule of law, HIVan
>>18665979>controlled oppositionImagine the sheer cognitive dissonance of being a shitlib in the year 2026. They were always doing what power wanted.
>>18665799Ayres was obviously an informant, as is anyone else with his career arcthe ones who weren't are dead, in prison, or in exile
>>18665996>Uhh yeah I might have raped that girl BUT YOU WEREN'T SUPPOSED TO HEAR ME TALK ABOUT IT
>>18665831It’s not legalism. If you want to live in a society where you’re secure from the government having incentives to arbitrarily spy on you, you have to accept that unfortunate things like this are going to happen. Some things are more important than making sure every crime gets punished.
>>18666029Hoover was already spying illegally. It's much worse today.
>>18666009They were delusional radicals who thought they could start a communist revolution in the US by doing terroristic acts. The feds who caught them wanted two things, prevent domestic terrorism and keep tabs on radical organizations, infiltrate and subvert them if they get too much of a threat. So got people like the Weather Underground kids to cooperate, probably even convinced them that actually, peaceful activism is a much better way to change the system. By the end of the Cold War, left-wing radicalism went from organized labor and terrorism to cultural criticism and lifestyle activism, while federal power is greater than ever. A modern equivalent would be if Luigi Mangioni got released on a technicality and later starts a podcast where he calls for normies to participate in boycotts and discussed X drama.
>>18666029what happened in the 60s is a lot of middle Americans were very paranoid about shit and were willing to tolerate the government doing illegal stuff against antiwar and leftist groups
>>18665867>FDR wanted a secret police. Boom. Hoover.that wasn't really until the postwar years, in his time they were mostly investigating organized crime
>>18665996Letting leftoid terrorists walk free isn’t rule of law>>18666223Based
>>18666232Hoover refused to touch organized crime for years. He just hit a few maddog gunmen for publicity. He was spying illegally on commies over a century ago. FDR wanted everybody spied on.
>>18666232Even so, FDR vastly expanded Federal LEA powers while they had been very limited before then.
>>18666266They made legal what Hoover and FDR were long doing. It got worse from there.
>>18665799Right-wing people have a selection pressure against higher education because they value family and reproduction more highly which motivates them to start working earlier. It's not impossible to have a right-wing academic, but it usually means counterbalancing other values, whereas liberal-left people are far more likely to be satisfied spending their 20s without really beginning adult life in a certain sense. The cons of this strategy are obvious but there are also major pros. For one example, right-wing people are consistently more likely to have children and political beliefs are moderately heritable, so in the long-term, despite the efflorescence of liberal-left writing, the demographics are politically against them.
>>18666266the Mann Act and interstate kidnapping act predated FDR though?
I actually went to see Bill Ayers give a talk at a bookstore (mostly for the novelty factor) where he was selling some book, and this conservative guy in the audience got up during the Q&A and started fuming about him and... Obama. Like it's just funny to me because the actual guy is pretty boring in his politics because he's an old boomer who is also kind of hippie and "left" in a vague way with some inkling of remorse for engaging in violence when asked (mostly for being idiots about it though), yet he pops up again and again as a hate figure for political conservatives. I think Fox News would grind their gears because he was a far leftist in the Weather Underground and was never successfully prosecuted. He did "rehabilitate" himself by becoming a professor at the University of Illinois but it's not like he's really prominent in academia. If it wasn't for the seething about him from the right then he'd have been forgotten a long time ago.>>18665831Well they didn't actually kill anybody (other than members of their own group when accidentally blowing themselves up), and generally the police themselves were pretty incompetent back then too, and attempts to secure convictions in the following decades failed due to lack of evidence and the fact that the state's own informants in the organization were often unreliable weirdos themselves. Also that's before mentioning that the FBI was also engaged in lawless practices at the time.I think the most interesting / weird thing about the whole story is that stuff was just generally less organized back then. Airports didn't even have security until the early 1970s because hijackings became a weekly occurance. People are like "how did they smuggle these bombs into government buildings?" They were small bombs they'd use to blow up toilets but there was very little security for anything. This was a joke in one of the Airplane movies:https://youtu.be/FCkagYixpuc
>>18665799One of them became a treasurer for blm lmaoCan't make this shit up
>>18666303>Also that's before mentioning that the FBI was also engaged in lawless practices at the timethe break-in of the FBI office in Philly in 71, and they never caught the burglars because they were that incompetent
>>18666312the left and the libertarian right found common cause in opposing government surveillance back then which led to stuff like the Church Hearings
>>18666303Because I mean, come the fuck on. Even if these guys did go to jail they still had due process, access to lawyers, unlimited appeals, etc. In Russia, China, or Iran you get none of that or any legal or human rights at all.
>>18666312COINTEPRO was a big enough scandal to get Congress involved and that involved the feds, but there was generally a lot more general lawlessness in the late 60s / early 70s among both these left-wing groups and the police. There were a bunch of these revolutionary groups competing to blow up the cops, and most of the time their membership was very young, teenagers and people in their early twenties. Then the cops were also trying to blow them up. I'm talking about cops in the local police departments going out and blowing shit up. People were just planting bombs under each other's cars. But I presume they did this because they thought they could get away with it. Getting the explosives was so much easier back then too, you could just buy sticks of TNT at the hardware or farm supply store or mail-order catalog and pay in cash. Like the whole thing is kind of hilarious and retarded from my perspective.
>>18666303>yet he pops up again and again as a hate figure for political conservativesI think it's more an example of the overt ideological bias and corruption within academic institutions where they look to protect 'fellow travelers' while applying stringent standards to unbelievers. The right-wing brings it up because it's a pertinent contrast to the fact there are academics getting fired for minor racial infractions while a literal terrorist is tolerated.
>>18666327Jonathan Pollard would not have walked out of jail in under 30 years if he was convicted of spying in China, I can tell you that.
>>18666336back in like 2016 the Chinese busted up a large spy network the CIA had been funding to obtain information on national defense secrets. they were just lined in front of a wall and shot.
>>18666344US law technically allows the death penalty for espionage, but it's not been used since the Rosenbergs because the PR around that case was so bad that the government never tried it again. Even then you would still get lawyers, appeals, etc which you don't in China or Iran.
>>18666333Yeah the right has an axe to grind with the universities, and there's a kind of class divide between people who go to universities and people who don't. You'll see a theme that comes up again and again is that these professor jobs are "cushy." They tend to emphasize that a lot, like they are really well paid (haha). But they tend to get paid less than many of their peers who get "real jobs." (I also suspect Ayers' academic career was handicapped by his involvement in the Weather Underground, but that's neither here nor there.)I don't like the universities, but there's a couple of things I want to unpack.Conservatives tend to think more highly of the universities than I do. Like they think people actually learn things, just the wrong things because it's woke. But nowadays the university system is so mechanical and bureaucratic that I'm not sure anybody does learn anything. There's something like 50,000 academic papers published every year in the academic field he was in (education studies). So, obviously, those texts don't exist to be read, they exist to drive research grants so the departments can produce more texts that no one reads. Bill Ayers just became another functionary in a machine that really doesn't have anything to do with whatever these places were once doing. So it doesn't matter if he was a terrorist. It's like going to work for any corporation. You hear about that academic in the U.K. who turned out to be a fraudster who killed himself after getting fired? It caused a scandal there but even the people who hired him didn't read his work.
>>18666347in such fairness the legal system in China isn't particularly worse or harsher than any place else on ordinary street crime, but they very much have the medieval belief that lese majeste (ie. crimes against the state) results in your swift and brutal demise without normal legal mechanisms being invoked. the Western world moved past that 250 years ago.
>>18666355you can read complaints from the 18th century that the university system was crap back then. Gibbon wrote that Oxford was a complete waste of five years of his life.
>>18666355A professor isn't just a paper-writer though, they're also an educator. Ayers would have been teaching classes where his ideological views could have affected which students scored highly and which didn't. He also would have, probably, had doctoral students, whose views he would influence and send out into the world to propagate. On top of that, links to a prominent university are going to affect your likelihood to get book deals, which it seems Ayers has received. Even if his articles aren't read, his books might be. All in all, it's a position of cultural importance, which is why both political wings are concerned with who receives academic appointments.
all those 60s-70s bad boys (think Gary Trudeau) became the lamest Facebook boomer Democrats
>>18666365To me it feels like a bunch of boomers still deluding themselves into thinking college students are the revolutionary subject. That's what the Weather Underground thought back in the 1960s, and by planting bombs and saying a bunch of really crazy shit then they would sync up with some objective process that would lead to college students forming some revolutionary army, which never happened because the Vietnam War was not the cataclysmic event (like World War I) they thought it was at the time which kills very large numbers of people and destroys a lot of physical wealth and results in state collapse. Also I'm not at all convinced grad students going out into the world to propagate their views have had much traction over the past 50 years. A lot of left-wing thought revolves around how to activate the "subaltern" people or "the working class," but much of what has happened over the past century is that these people have just dropped out of politics compared to mass factory labor in the 1890s. They might have political opinions or will get up off their ass to vote sometimes but that's not the same thing really as what these left-wing academics want them to do. Also on the right they were linking Ayers to Obama because they were part of the same board of a non-profit organization in Chicago, but the real question to ask is to follow the money about where the money for the non-profit came from, and the answer to that was probably rich people. Anything having to do with grants or foundations is about rich people. And then once you're trying to convince rich people to give you money you're probably not doing something very radical.
What would you conclude if the state gave James Fields amensty, a bullshit job and a sinecure?
>>18666312None of them would talk and the FBI rarely ever solves cases if nobody talks.
>>18665799An entire region of the country was pardoned and regained their citizenship and seats in Congress after starting a war and causing the deaths of 600,000 people.
Ayers and Dohrn's kid put out a book this year. I liked it. Pretty funny how much of a milquetoast liberal their child turned out to be. Really through in his writing about everything his parents did.
>>18666020That's just leftoid cope. He got a cushy sinecure because *a lot* of boomer university professors felt guilty that the extent of their 'activism' against the Vietnam War was limited to turning up to anti-war protests to hit on cute sluts
The Vietnam draft ended up being mostly blacks and inbred goobers from the South, few middle class whites were drafted and that included nearly all of the antiwar crowd. They were protesting something that didn't even really affect them.
>>18666020Twelve post best post.Ignore the obvious revisionists trying to distort the narrative.
