We've finished all 50 US States, but there's still a few more spots I wanna make threads for. This is 5 of 6.

Puerto Rico is an unincorporated and organized commonwealth territory of the USA. It was ceded to the USA following the conclusion of the Spanish-American War in 1898. Its name is Spanish for rich port, but the island is commonly called Boricua by locals (said to mean land of the valiant lord in the native language). It has a population of 3.2 Million and is 13.8k square miles in size. Its capital and largest city is San Juan.
Puerto Rico was first settled by the Ortiroid culture around 2000 BCE. By the time Columbus discovered the island in 1493, the Taino were the dominant culture. They quickly declined due to warfare, exploitation, and disease. For many centuries the island was an important Spanish military post, as well as serving as an important port. It, along with Cuba, was one of the last two Spanish colonies in the New World.
It was quickly invaded and occupied during the Spanish-American War. The 1900 Foraker Act established a civil government, and Puerto Ricans were made US citizens by the 1917 Jones-Shafroth Act. Continuing in the 20th century, there were many debates over statehood by Puerto Ricans. Independence Movements were sharply curtailed in the 1948 Ley de la Mordaza law.
In 1954, four Puerto Rican nationalists attacked the House of Representatives, firing into the house chamber. Five were wounded. Puerto Rico has a higher population than seventeen states, and the issue of statehood/independence remains a hot topic. After WW2, a high amount of rural to urban migration combined with Operation Bootstrap saw a great increase in Puerto Rico's infrastructure and economic development. Since 1976, Puerto Rican companies are exempt from income tax on local revenue. Puerto Ricans also do not pay federal income tax.

The level of intuitional neglect in Puerto Rico is a tragedy. The federal government doesn’t care. The islands government doesn’t care. Inland towns empty out and estates are sold to foreigners who continue to price out the locals. It’s going to die as a country and culture within a century if nothing drastic is done.

Fun fact: Every Puerto Rican had every STD

McKinley is the mistake that keeps on giving. The Caribbean menace must be fought in all of its forms except the darker Haitians and the Rastafari, who are the only groups in the region not to suffer from the planter's disease.

if the retards would vote to become a state, maybe i'd care more about them receiving federal aid.

I think about pirates and sugar farming when I think about them

was the reggaetonification of puerto rico preventable?

They overwhelmingly voted for statehood in 2024, congress has refused to act because republicans (wrongly imo) assume it would necessarily mean 2 dem senators and 7-9 dem congressmen. Ignoring that PR is very catholic, socially conservative, and historically virulently anticommunist. Meanwhile over 3 million US citizens are denied representation in the government that makes the laws that effect them every day.

Puerto Ricans are easily the most obnoxious Latinx in existence, which is really saying something.

The U.S. federal government benefits immensely from neither giving Puerto Rico statehood, nor independence. Its status as a territory means it can be neglected and the local people have no recourse.

The most obnoxious by far are still Argenintians. Frankly Puerto Ricans aren’t even in the top 5, Mexicans easily beat them.

Argenintians okay in my book.

The combined gibs paid out to the puerto ricanx community in gringostan is probably 10x whatever benefit the USgov derives from leaving the remaining islanders as impoverished slumdogs

I think you should go back to San Juan/
When will you shut up and get gone?

Everyone there will give big cheer!/
Everyone there already moved here!

I wish to God we would just give them independence already. I hate these fucking reggaeton monkeys so goddamn much.

Blacks, Mexicans, Arabs, and pretty much every other minority group aside from Jews also tend to be very socially conservative but that doesn't stop them from voting for Democrats on mass. Social beliefs mean absolutely nothing compared to freebies for them, so they will always vote for whoever promises the most freebies i.e. Democrats.

Oh god, a government that supports and enriches average people instead of just billionaires, how absolutely horrifying. I mean imagine if people could afford medical care like in every other western country.

>Oh god, a government that supports and enriches average people instead of just billionaires, how absolutely horrifying. I mean imagine if people could afford medical care like in every other western country

Did you seriously think the governments of Biden and Obama weren't primarily focused on filling the pockets of billionaires and corporations? Or that they were seriously trying to establish free healthcare to the detriment of their healthcare lobbyist sponsors? Get real dude.
>>
>>18667223
Yes they were trying to establish universal healthcare. Republicans did their utmost to kill it. I was an adult in 2008 and saw the full ACA debate. Were you?
>>
>>18667227
What the president says he wants to do and what the president actually intends to do are two very different things. I imagine with you must be very old indeed with your senile levels of naivete to believe everything a politician tells you. At no point during either administration was free healthcare a genuine goal for the Democrats. Both parties are primarily focused on enriching corporations and thus themselves in turn. The differences come down to what they push alongside filling their pockets, with the Democrats pursuing more socially destructive policies with supporting illegal immigration, abortion up to childbirth, letting repeat violent offenders roam free, tolerating theft, shoving gender theory down kids throats, among many, many, many other self-destructive policies.
