Where does this idea come from that Getman nationalists are in any way "ashamed" of the ancient Germanic tribes? Yeah, there is this one quote by Hitler, as reported by Speer (but there are also lots of contradictory quotes by him). But that's it. German nationalists always idealized the ancient Germanics, and they especially idealized them because they were seen as strong masculine warriors opposed to the "effeminate" Roman city-dwellers. That's why nationalist and neo-pagan imagery often depicts them as much more "barbarian" than they actually were, think of the whole modern Viking aesthetics. They like the idea of their ancestor being a strong big guy, clothed in bearskins, living in a harsh land of dark forests, preserving a healthy and virtuous life style, and then going out to defeat and destroy Rome. That's why the Germania of Tacitus was almost like a bible to German nationalists. Yeah, they also valued civilization (and always pointed to the civilizational accomplishments of the medieval and early modern/modern Germans), but in antiquity, they romanticized exactly the image of an untamed and strong warrior people, which they viewed as superior to the "decadent" Romans.
