The original purpose the regime desired him for was actually what he failed in, but short of the plague, nothing bad came from his time in the hot seat. Our historical narratives of him, however, are informed by the big red cartoon heart eyes that oligarchs have for a well manicured aristocracy selecting a princeps to succeed them after their death. Something about it is uniquely charming to a noble ego, in all likelihood he was unremarkable and competent, had his reign been a different century his story might have been different.

Yeah, he continued the Nerva-Trajan policies that Hadrian had inherited and expanded upon, but he was also an active if quiet ruler who tried to steer the polity into a more humane path. His EQ must have been very high at the verh least.
