I know this is just a shitpost but part of the problem was that 3-letter agencies had a lot of red tape when it came to sharing intelligence (The CIA for example is not allowed to directly operate within US borders). That's what the Patriot Act was meant to solve, it gave the CIA, FBI, and NSA the ability to share intelligence and collaborate through the newly-formed Department of Homeland Security

It was something that hadn't happened before and communication between FAA and the military had issues. Plus the call to shoot down planes only came after the final plane had already crashed. The systems in place just weren't made for suicide striking air planes.

also there were war games going on that simulated several hijacked planes and even inserted false radar blips to air traffic control. I took everyone involved a VERY long time to realize there was a real event taking place and when they did, there were no fighters available close enough. and no orders for interception were made.
thats how they could do a fun joyride through one of the most heavily defended airspace on the planet for HOURS

With only eight available fighter aircraft, and they have to be dispatched in pairs, they were dealing with as many as 22 possible hijacks on the day of 9/11 and they couldn’t separate the war game exercises from the actual hijacks.

It did work though? Last I checked it's been 25 years since a terrorist attack on US soil on the scale of 9/11. Contrast this with the late 20th century when there were several high-profile terrorist attacks like the Oklahoma City bombing as well as the 1993 World Trade Center bombing just to name a couple

Actually it could have been prevented easily. Some airport security guys were suspicious about a bunch of Middle Eastern males with one way plane tickets, but they were told they had to let them on the planes because they didn't want to be sued for racial profiling.

Again, the issue was the bureaucratic barriers that made it difficult to share intelligence with other agencies

I doubt if it'll last much longer. I live in Australia where we have 3 undersea cables connecting us to the rest of the world. One was damaged last week by Chinese espionage, much like dozens of cables are damaged by Russian ships in the Baltic every year. It's as easy as dropping a fishing net from a civilian vessel, they aren't well protected. In an actual conflict, intercontinental internet would disappear, and even shorter ranged internet would be slower and less reliable. For Americans this may be a bit less damaging but imagine every Australian company losing their access to Microsoft servers on the same day. No Outlook, no OneDrive, not even MS Word or Excel. The economy would crash instantly. I work at a law firm and I can tell you there are no more paper files, nor are there even filing cabinets anymore. Important jurisdictions like parliament and the military might be able to use satellite internet if the US wasn't hogging it all to itself (a huge maybe in a conflict scenario), but in general life as we have known it for 30+ years would be over instantly. There are also huge issues with cybercrime which will take off in a real conflict since the internet. Governments will realise this soon and start creating their own great firewalls of China and Microsoft backups, but the unpopularity and expense of the might make it too late.
