What is the point of it all if all your struggles, dreams, achievements, friends, family, and everything else crumble to dust; all memories are to enter into obscurity and forgotten.
>>18683888Thy not to think about it
>>18683933It keeps me up at night as I struggle with crippling debts and crushes dreams.
>>18683888Introduce yourself to Epicurus
>>18683888Things do not need to be eternal to have value.
>>18684089What value is the common footsoldier under Subutai now that hundreds of years have passed and he is no longer remembered and his empire gone?
>>18683888This is what atheism leads to but few are willing to admit it
>>18684091The experienced lived in life. Why do you need the recognition of random people long after your death to find value during life? It's nonsensical.
>>18684111Where is that experience after im gone?
>>18684113Why does it matter after you're gone? You either don't exist anymore, are reborn, or are in the afterlife. Why would the memory of your experiences by people born hundreds of years later mean anything?
>>18684114Then if they dont mean anything then whats the point?
>>18684122You seem to put all meaning in life in the hands of others. If other people, both in this life and future generations, don't know of and value your experiences, then those experiences have no meaning. What makes you think that? Why can't experiences simply matter to the one living through them in the present without the need for validation from others?
>>18684134>Why can't experiences simply matter to the one living through them in the present without the need for validation from others?nta but you're completely missing the point here, even if this was the case you will rot all of it away making it ultimately meaningless in every sense of the word and not just on a cosmic scale
>>18684137I know the point made but again find this to be a useless consideration. If the experiences lived by you while you are alive matter to you when alive, then they simply matter regardless of whether anyone remembers them centuries from now or not. If when you die, you no longer exist, then the memory from others of you still remains irrelevant to you because you no longer exist to bemoan this, and even if you are remembered long term like Julius Caesar, everything is still going to end at some point so it's still not going to be forever. Find meaning in your own life and experiences while you live it and don't concern yourself with nonsense such as whether or not people will remember and validate you for centuries to come, because that is irrelevant to your life and will be beyond irrelevant after your death.
>>18684150Either life has meaning or it doesnt. Life ceases to exist in time. How can meaning be derived from something that doesnt exist? Therefore life has no meaning.
>>18684150It stops mattering when you die as you’re not around anymore to care about it. So everything you do is pointless even if it meant something to you at some point. Also your argument basically boils down to turn your brain off bro.
The point of life is to be alive anon. The fact that you exist at all is nothing short of miraculous. You should learn to appreciate life for what it is. Nobody is owed an afterlife, God could still exist even without heaven, If that's depressing to you, that's your problem. "What is the meaning of life?" will NEVER have a satisfying answer because it's the ultimate question. Even if we knew the answer, it would simply never be a good enough one, so don't worry about it. Trees don't ask what the meaning of their lives are, they're perfectly content eating the soil and making oxygen. Bees don't question the meaning of their lives, they're perfectly content making honey. Birds don't question the meaning of their lives, they're more than happy flying around and laying eggs. Humans are here to think. It's what we do, just like how birds fly and bees make honey, so why should it be any different?
>>18684164It is different because we arent mindless beasts.
>>18684160Life has meaning during life. Life cannot have meaning when there is no life in existence to possess meaning. I truly don't know what is confusing you about this.
>>18684161>It stops mattering when you die as you’re not around anymore to care about it. Correct.>So everything you do is pointless even if it meant something to you at some point.Incorrect. Why would it be pointless? Life has meaning when you are alive and experiencing it. Life cannot continue to have meaning when you are dead and no longer alive, because you are now dead. No, this doesn't make life while lived meaningless, because you're still alive. No, it doesn't matter if the meaning ceases upon death, because you are now dead.
>>18684190nta but here let's make it simple for you. Imagine you worked on a project for 3 decades and it means everything to you. But after the 30 year mark everything you ever did or felt about it just snaps out of existence. Will you not consider that time wasted?
>lust provoking image>time wasting irrelevant question
>>18684195Why would it be wasted? Its the journey that counts and matters, not the destination.
>>18684183>It is different because we arent mindless beasts.Non sequitur
>>18684201It would be wasted because a sane person would wish to have used that time instead for something that still matters to them. Why is this so difficult to grasp?>its the journey that counts and mattersThe journey snapped out of existence, all you have now would at best be the destination so you can't even cope with some hedonism here. And that destination is also meaningless since everything you have ever felt about all of this is also erased. Everything about it is pointless
>>18684195>Will you not consider that time wasted?Depends on whether or not you consider the project a means to an end, which you shouldn't
>>18684208This implies that you care about certain things for absolutely no reason at all. If I am wrong tell me 1 thing you care about and 1 reason why
>>18683976This.
>>18684207>The journey snapped out of existenceAnon, ALL journeys you go on are "snapped out of existence" as soon as they are over. That's why your argument has to boil down to some insane strawman involving a nebulous 30 year long "project". The point is the experience>the experience is gone when you dieYes, the past no longer exists, the future doesn't exist yet. The present is what matters. Why do (you) have such a hard time grasping this?
>>18684195No, because it meant something to me while I was alive.
>>18684216Maybe because youre delusional. Your experiences will cease to exist and any derived meaning too.
>>18684219>Your experiences will cease to exist and any derived meaning too. That is correct. Now please tell the class what your problem is with this
>>18684219NTA but I don't really care that my life will no longer "matter" when I'm gone because I'm not a solipsistic retard and I understand that the universe has existed before I was born and will continue to exist after I'm gone. If you don't mind me asking, how would you feel if you hadn't eaten breakfast this morning?
>>18684215>Anon, ALL journeys you go on are "snapped out of existence" as soon as they are over. And? At least regularly you will still have something out of it at their end. Something that is still valuable for you in the present you're pondering over that past, so it could not have been a waste of time in that very moment.>the past no longer exists, the future doesn't exist yetHow have you determined this?
>>18684221The world doesnt care about your feelings anon. You cannot conjure up meaning where none exist in the first place.
>>18684230There is no such thing as "wasted time", there's just time, and time doesn't care about your personal value judgment
>>18684216Notice how you are dodging the question. Where did I ask you there anything about you still being alive? If you don't mind please waste 3 decades for me staring at the ceiling and then wipe your mind with a nice hard impact towards your cranium
>>18684233>There is no such thing as "wasted time"If you can't do 3 decades I want you to film yourself doing nothing at all for 24 hours. And by nothing I mean not even browsing the web>time doesn't careYou are retarded. Nobody ever implied time was the one caring.
>>18683888There's no point. You're just a biological machine made by your parents' genes to make copies of themselves. Read Dawkins.
>>18684237>I want you to film yourself doing nothing at all for 24 hours. And by nothing I mean not even browsing the webThat's not even a challenge. Are you some kind of spazz with ADHD or something?>If you can't do 3 decadesBuddhist monks go their entire lives doing basically nothing because they set out to prove these exact principles because none of this is a new concept.
>If you are aware of a state which you call ”is” – or reality, or life – this implies another state called ”isn’t” – or illusion, or unreality, or nothingness, or death. There it is. You can’t know one without the other. And so, as to make life poignant, it’s always going to come to an end." - Alan WattsWatts may have been an alcoholic hippie, but he was right about this. I suggest you read more into some of his lectures and on Zen Buddhist principles OP
>>18684234That was the direct answer to the question. Now, why would I stare at the ceiling for 30 years? Why would you even think that's remotely comparable? Doing something you enjoyed and which motivated you for 30 years is exactly the same staring at the wall for 30 years like a vegetable? That makes no sense whatsoever. But I get it, you're set on being a miserable nihilist just because you won't be remembered in 500 years after your death. I tried reasoning with you but you have your mind made up.
>>18684243>That's not even a challenge.Okay then it should be easy for you. Your next reply should contain the footage or else you're bullshitting >Buddhist monksYeah they simply lie. You know how they pretend an obviously dead guy is actually just meditating.
>>18684256>Yeah they simply lie.If you're struggling this badly to comprehend being able to meditate, I think you might just be extremely sheltered
>>18683888Dying is unironically a preferable scenario to living forever. I think we all want to live longer, but nobody wants to live forever. Even some Christian theologians posit universal Annihilationism, as otherwise, sinning would actually be preferable
>>18684254>That was the direct answer to the question. You started talking about something completely irrelevant (you being alive had nothing to do with it a beloved 30 yo project becoming meaningless) and you can't even track the conversation. You should stare at the wall for 30 years because you don't mind wasting time
>>18684261Okay so we can see here that you have not attached the requested video. Surely since you aren't sheltered like me you'd have one at hand.
>>18684273*farts*
>>18684279Nope, I am merely saying you're lying because you haven't provided evidence
>>18684288>"I could never meditate or sit still for 24 hours thus it's impossible"
>>18684303>retard spewing fallacies he doesn't even understandNope again, you are claiming you can do it but you have zero evidence for your claim. I never said because I can't do it therefore you can't. It's simple to shut me up. Just provide some evidence for your positive claim that's all
>>18684310Well you're retarded anyways because if I'm filing myself sitting still for 24 hours then I'm still doing *something* by the very fact that I'm filming myself. But it would make for a good experimental Bottle Film
>>18684319Look I know you're butt blasted, don't need to take it out on me. If I wasn't the one dominating you right now it could have been anyone else. Also I see that you require the assistance of an adult for every step of the way. You can easily set up a machine to film you without any further involvement on your part during the entire testing period.
