Today we're looking at Tokugawa Ieyasu, born Matsudaira Takechiyo. Tokugawa Ieyasu (1/31/1543 - 6/1/1616) is the last of Japan's Three Great Unifiers. He founded the Tokugawa Shogunate, which lasted from 1603 until the Meiji Restoration in 1868. Some notable facts or feats include the following>Born from step-sibling incest at Okazaki Castle>Son of a small time daimyo. Briefly lived as a hostage to daimyo Imagama Yoshimoto for his father. While a hostage, learned military tactics from the Imagama clan. >Succeeded his father as a vassal of the Oda clan under Oda Nobunaga. Later pledged himself to Toyotomi Hideyoshi following a short rivalry. >Fought together with Toyotomi Hideyoshi, relocated and built his castle in a little fishing village called Edo (now Tokyo)>Through many battles was crucial in the unification of Japan and squishing many clans.>Became the strongest daimyo under Toyotomi's regime. Aided him in the failed invasion of Korea. Succeeded him after his death at the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600. >Established the Tokugawa Shogunate. >In office as shogun for only two years from 1603 to 1605. Voluntarily resigned to preserve honor and integrity of the position. >Still de facto ruler of Japan until his death>Implemented the bakuhan system which established strict rules and guidelines to have the daimyo and samurai live in peace. >Beginning in 1609, distanced Japan from Europeans due to suspicion regarding Roman Catholicism plus European motives, except for the Dutch in Nagasaki. Signed the Christian Expulsion Edict in 1614. >Toyotomi Hideyori, Hideyoshi's rightful heir, contested his power in 1614.
