Is anarcho-communism a viable real world ideology? There have been multiple anarchist projects in history that achieved various levels of success, most notably the The Ukrainian Free Territory (1918–1921), Revolutionary Catalonia (1936–1931), and the The Korean People's Association in Manchuria (1929–1931). However, none of these societies lasted for more than three years and all three of them were eventually destroyed by outside military forces. The Ukrainian Anarchists were defeated by the Red Army, the Spanish anarchists were defeated by Franco's Nationalists and the Korean anarchist were defeated by the Japanese Empire.

This is why no form of anarchy can ever work beyond everything else. Even if it can be established, an organized state will destroy it before long.

Better than anarcho capitalism

None of these experiments were Anarchist. The Anarchists of the time criticized these experiments. Those experiments still had authority/governmentalism as the basis of there organizational model rather then continuous free association. An Anarchist model would basically be people associating based on common agreement; rather then creating a random group and then making a decision. Any disagreement leads to disassociation. They are fluid networks of association. Their is no polity/community with a defined in-group/out-group. So for example, People who like X associate with each other and do X while People who like Y associate with each other and do Y; instead of people being in one group where they decide to do X or Y as a whole. We see this type of organizing in the Libre Milieu experiments in the late 19th century. Where we see communities operating based on continuous free association and no laws.

The type of organization/organizing I have described has gone by different names within the Anarchist tradition and isn't sectarian. Be it Federation as described by Bakunin and Proudhon or the Free Commune as described by the Anarcho-Communists or Post-Revolutionary Organization as described by the Anarcho-Syndicalists or the Union of Egoists of Stirner; they all described the same type of organization/organizing principle. Kropotkin, Goldman, Proudhon, Rocker, Pouget, Malatesta and Bakunin were against democracy, laws, government and the polity-form.

That's a core issue that needs addressing in any government system, and frankly anarchists can't seem to really answer it. "It's not fair if we get ruined by outsiders!" is a cheap cop out since defending yourselves from threats is an integral necessity in life as much as having to eat, use the bathroom, and breathe air. It's not some afterthought, your system's ability to SURVIVE the world is of utmost importance and that requires the thing anarchists dread so much (rigidly hierarchical and disciplined armies led by men with authority to make decisions which aren't necessarily "popular").
The Bolsheviks themselves wised up to this shit quick, hence why they reintroduced officers' uniforms, salutes, hierarchy, etc. asap into the Red Army.

Anarcho-communism is a paradox. Freedom inherently means people will have different outcomes because of different choices, different time preferences, different skills. It's akin to "What if we had a free market but we call it communism?", that's just capitalism with your flag on it, retard.

The mondragon corporation is an often cited example of a institution based on worker collectives. Wether or not it fits the anarcho capitalism label or if it's more anarcho syndicalist idk.
