First my definition of free will: The ability to have made a different decision if time was rewound. In life there are really only two reasons why you made a certain decision. You either A) Chose something because you prefer that option or B) Because you were forced to choose that optionSo imagine you needed to paint your room and choose a color. You either decide to choose blue because it's your favorite color, or you choose red because your dad forced you to choose that color. So did you really make a free decision? Well in the latter option, obviously no. But in the former option the answer is also no. Because you never woke up one day "choosing" to prefer the color blue over any other color. You were either born that way or that taste developed unconsciously later. This is the same for everything. For relationships, food you prefer, sports you play, music you listen to, etc...There isn't a single decision that you've ever made that's actually truly "free". Therefore, if time was rewound to the moment you had to choose the color of the paint and your dad was not forcing you to pick red, you would have chosen blue every single time without exception.
>>18687499Shut up nigger. Have some humility. Maybe there just wasn't a philosopher that could prove you wrong YET. So don't be a dumbass full of hubris.
>>18687506good troll
If the future is something that can be predicted, then free will cannot truly exist since our fates are predetermined. The only way free will can exist would be if nobody, not even God, can predict the future, which of course refutes omnipotence
>>18687514Maybe omnipotence doesn't require the ability to do logical fallacies? Like a square circle. The same way you wouldn't know the future as it's not something that truly exists (yet).
>>18687522Yes, it does. If *nothing* is impossible for God, then it means he can infact give us free will without giving us the capability to do evil.
>>18687528Maybe God can do anything but within logic? As illogical things are impossible no matter your might.
>>18687530Then he is not omnipotent if he is bound by logic, again, *nothing* should be impossible for an omnipotent god
>>18687531Okay but if I became maximally mighty I still couldn't break logic though. No power can penetrate it.
>>18687499Dumb reasoning, the whole point of free will is being able to paint the room blue instead of red. But even if you claim this to not be free will because some unknown force makes you choose one over the other, consider that it is wholly feasible to base every decision on chance by rolling a dice.
>>18687539>But even if you claim this to not be free will because some unknown force makes you choose one over the otherYes that's exactly why I don't consider it free will>consider that it is wholly feasible to base every decision on chance by rolling a dice. So?
>>18687499How would you explain cognitive dissonance in this case, the idea that our mind fights between two conflicting impulses, like the body wanting to jog or feeling as though someone is pushing us, even when we rationally understand that neither impulse is real? What if I chose blue simply because, without any outside influence or strong feeling either way, I thought it fit the room best aesthetically?
>>18687499That fucking faggot took Berkeley's correct evidence of God and tried REALLY HARD TO DENY IT PROVED GOD'S EXISTENCE so invented Will or whatever. Never saw anyone trying so hard to be an atheist, incredible.
>>18687499Whether or not we have free will is irrelevant. Even if our future is predetermined, it can never be predicted with 100% accuracy, even on a fundamental level
>>18687659Thank you desu
>The ability to have made a different decision if time was rewound. What I don’t understand is what this has to do with “freedom”. If my will is unable to cause things which do not exist to suddenly appear into being from thin air, do I not have “free will”? It often feels like that’s being assumed in these stupid discussions
>>18687499I. FALLACIOUS PREMISE; NOT ALL ELECTIONS ARE REDUCIBLE TO TWO OPTIONS CONSISTING OF ONE THAT IS YOUR ABSOLUTE PREDILECTION, AND ONE THAT ENTAILS COERCION OR NECESSITY.II. I CHOSE TO REPLY TO YOU IN THIS THREAD; IT WAS NOT INEVITABLE, IT WAS NOT NECESSARY, I WAS NOT DESTINED TO IT, NOR DID ANYONE FORCE ME: IT IS AN ACT FROM MY OWN FREE WILL.III. BATHE IN SUNLIGHT; TOUCH GRASS.
>>18687630To be honest I don't know exactly why our minds sometimes fights between two conflicting impulses. > I thought it fit the room best aesthetically?I still think this is a decision based on something you did not choose to like.>>18687666Because if we define free will as just "being able to do what you want" than that means a pig roaming around in the wild choosing when to roll in the mud has free will. I think we both agree free will must then mean something more than just "being able to do what you want". If you are truly free than the possibility of having made a different decision in the same exact circumstances would prove to me that you are truly free.>>18687672Name another option outside of those two
>>18687666And let me ask you what do you think free will means?
>>18687499you must be a Calvinist, a Catholic, or a hate-filled retard but I repeat myself. A person can only be evil if he has the will to commit evil hence why there is a difference between murder and manslaughter. Furthermore, good works don't make you a good person but someone with a good will does produce good works. It really shouldn't be that hard for you to understand.
>>18687791I'm an atheist retard
>>18687764>Name another option outside of those twoWHAT YOU REQUIRE, WHAT YOU NEED, WHAT YOU MUST, WHAT YOU MUST NOT, WHAT YOU WANT, WHAT YOU CAN, WHAT COMPELS YOU... THERE ARE INFINITE OPTIONS TO EVERYTHING.THE FACT THAT YOU CANNOT CONCEIVE OF FREE WILL IS A «YOU PROBLEM».
>>18687808fuck off you disgusting mexican pedophile. I hope one day a poster from /his/ tracks you down, crushes your skull apart with a brick, and dumps your corpse into a sewer where it fucking belongs.
>>18687811What did he do?
>>18687813cum-genius is literally an unemployed (was even fired from McDonalds, lol.) brown Mexican pedophile in his mid 30's (rough estimate) who has been spamming the history and literature boards for years with schizophrenic nonsense and rants about how Catholicism and Latin culture are inherently superior to everything else.I'll stop typing now because I don't want to go into a fit of pure unfiltered rage.
>>18687820lol wtf thats random thanks for the context though sorry to almost make you enraged
>>18687811>>18687813>>18687820>>18687823
>>18687825do you want me to start calling you by your real name cum genius? because that can be arranged.
>>18687831Is he hot at least? Wonder how he got the name "cum genius" ooohggghh
>>18687893He's mexican so obviously not
