This is why I pretend that it is in fact true. I make like half the threads on this board shitting on atheists despite being one myself because I want more people to enjoy the comforts of faith. I'd like to think I'm pretty good at arguing for the existence of God because I know where the weak points of the arguments are and how to hide them through rhetorical trickery.I suspect many clergymen are in the same boat.

You have a set of premises you trust. And you gauge from them if you should bet on the thing you're evaluating. To say "it's most likely not true" is to say "this thing wouldn't really jibe with the things I already trust". And that is fine but you cannot live your life based on likelihoods, because most premises are wrong. In general. Not just yours, but definitely yours as well. What you're finding out with this heuristic isn't truth, it's the limits of safespace where you can keep your inherited worldview.That's why you're drawn to fanatics. Because they are actually using the correct method to find truth - instead of starting with a set of milquetoast premises they were taugth as kids and filtering ideas through that, they take a few premises and push them as far as they can. In 5 years they will learn more about what's true and what isn't than a milquetoast filter would reveal to you in 100. They are encountering reality. Through some really weird situations, I admit. Sometimes running face-first into a wall. Sometimes not even realizing they ran into it, because they cherish the premises they inherited the same way you do. But stumbling in the dark sure beats sitting in it and trying to likelihood your way into what's around you.
