Oda was given probation and found work at a different electronics shop, but almost immediately resumed his old tricks and got fired for stealing and re-selling merchandise. As he was under 21, he was still considered a juvenile by Japanese law and received a two sentence in a juvenile facility. There, Oda befriended a 15 year old and told him he was going to rob his former employer, the Maruyo Radio Shop. After serving his sentence, he got a ¥7,000 fine for speeding and in order to raise the money, decided to put his robbery plan into action. The 15 year old boy would later claim Oda told him he was going to additionally murder the store employees and set fire to the place to destroy evidence, but he said that was untrue and he only planned a robbery.

On December 5, 1966, Oda and his teenage accomplice broke into the Maruyo Radio Shop, beat two employees with a hammer, badly injuring them, and stole ¥220,000 in cash and two watches. Oda knocked over a kerosene heater to start an intentional fire before fleeing. One of the store employees escaped, but the other died in the flames. On the 10th, the accomplice turned himself in and told police everything. Oda himself was arrested December 27. The Maruyo radio shop was closed afterward--a large mixed commercial complex currently occupies the spot.

Both perpetrators were charged with robbery, murder, and arson and indicted by the Fukuoka District Public Prosecutors Office. Oda was sentenced to death on December 14, 1968 on the grounds that he had done the crime out of "resentment and greed in regards to his treatment by his former employer." Oda himself argued that that was "partially true, but an insufficient explanation." He appealed his conviction and was rejected in March 1970, after claiming police coerced him into admitting that he intentionally started the fire in the radio shop. Oda's accomplice received 13 years.

Continuing to maintain his innocence, Oda appealed four more times during the 1970s but each time was rejected. Despite testimony from firefighters and police that the fire appeared to have been started accidentally, the Fukuoka District Court refused to grant Oda a re-trial. In 1994, the Fukuoka High Court Criminal Division 2 ran a test using a similar kerosene stove and found that it was next-to impossible to kick over. Even if intentionally pushed onto its side, the safety cutoff would detach the fuel tank. The court rejected this evidence in March 1995 and ruled that the stove could be manually tipped over.

Oda's next attempt at appealing his conviction was dismissed in October 1998 as there was no new evidence presented that he'd started the fire accidentally. He tried again a decade later. The appeal was filed in March 2008 but the Fukuoka High Court did not get around to reviewing it for four more years and then rejected it. A special appeal to the Supreme Court of Japan was rejected June 2013. Oda filed another appeal a few weeks later. It was not reviewed by the district court for almost 13 years. In March 2026 the court ruled that the evidence was "solid and unshakeable."

He remains on death row. It is believed that Oda has not been executed because he was only 20 when the crime happened and a re-trial might get his death sentence cleared, so the courts are reluctant to grant it.
