Built in 1889, it is a Grade I listed building, which puts it in the same category as other famous British structures like the Palace of Westminster or the Tower of London. It was the centre of Islam in Britain until around the 1960s when a large influx of Pakistani muslims resulting in many more new mosques being built. Still, from the 19th Century to the 1960s/1970s it was the first and most significant centre for Britain's historic muslim community; it was from Shah Jahan Mosque that the first popular English translations of the Quran came.
