Feminists frequently debate the idea of a pure patriarchy versus a non-existent matriarchy. However, when examining secular societies, what we label as patriarchy or matriarchy is rarely absolute; it is simply a spectrum of gendered power encompassing domestic, economic, social, religious, ideological, sexual, and political dominance.Purely patriarchal or purely matriarchal systems have never existed in isolation. The Mediterranean world, for instance, has long maintained an underlying matristic mentality of pre-Abrahamic origins—a stark contrast to the overt culture of El Macho mindset and Abrahamic traditions. Similarly, historic Germanic societies exhibited strong gynocentric tendencies (with Northern Europe originating the medieval culture of courtly devotion, aka. The eternal Simp) despite bragging being warrior cultures.By the same token, historically matriarchal cultures—such as those of the Basques or Celts—balanced their predominant matrilineality and matristic cosmovision with male-centered influences such as patrifocality and gynocracy.Societies are a spectrum that mixes patriarchal and matriarchal elements at the same time, but there have never been, nor will there ever be, pure systems.
