I've always been fascinated by them, one of the most fantastic neolithic old european traditions, why did they periodically burn their settlements? How did they manage to have a larger population and settlemenr size than the first cities of Sumer and wider mesopotamia? Man they are fascinating, lets discuss more about them here.
>>
>>18694282
>why did they periodically burn their settlements?
Probably because of the plague caused by flea infestations. Flea infestations can get out of control fast without modern pest control techniques.
>>

they didn't bury or even cremate their dead, they left the corpses out to be eaten by birds. Judging from their statues, many of which are either birds or fat women with bird heads or elongated, avian features, leaving out their dead for the vultures was some form of sacrifice.
All these ANF people were freaks.
>>
>>18694303
I mean Tibetans and Mongolians and a lot of buddhist cultures still do it today, Zoroastrians historically did too.
>>
>>18694282
>why did they periodically burn their settlements?
Simple, they'd rot and get filled with lice. It's a really common practice.
>>
Notice how she has no mouth but an elongated, beak-like nose and (what I think) are eyes on the sides of her head.
They'd probably wear bird masks similar to masquerades.
>>18694307
yeah but the Cucuteni were living in teeming megacities with thousands of apartments and tens of thousands of residents.
>>18694287
>>18694314
It didn't have to be plague. Just imagine a stone age city of 40,000 residents with no plumbing or running water. It would have been unimaginably filthy with human waste and trash everywhere and literal dead festering corpses in the forests just outside, that's why they had to burn it.

>>
>>18694426
no source, it just seems logical. We know they worshipped birds, we know they didn't bury or cremate the dead, and if you leave a corpse out to fester the birds will eat it.
>>
>>18694287
Nah, it's because the remnants of the buildings were hardened by the flames.
In order to reach the very high temperatures they evidently did, they would have had to use a specific kind of wood very high in flammable sap.

It's likely that over time this contributed to the deforestation that, combined with climate events causing severe famine, resulted in the downfall of their civilization and their eastern neighbors filling the vacuum.
>>
>>18694506
I don't know how people can still cling to such clumsy, out-dated models like climate change or famine to explain these collapses. There's no evidence whatsoever to support it.

The major climatic cooling events during Cucuteni-Trypallia's lifetime were in 4200-3900BC and 3700BC, and the timeline is like

>3900BC: first cooling event ends, Trypallia begins to flourish
>3900-3700BC golden age
>3700BC: second cooling event beings. Trypallian golden age continues unabated, people congregate in massive megacities
>3600BC: second cooling ends and climate becomes favorable again. People abandon the cities and move back to the countryside, smaller villages, some pastoralism. Overall population size shrinks
>3200-3000BC, after 400 years of stable life, with no significant climatic events, all forms of Trypallian civilization suddenly disappear
>>
Their golden age began right after a major climatic cooling and they got hit with one right in the middle of their golden age and it continued unabated, people just moved into the cities for a while.

No civilization can collapse because of the weather or an earthquake. If the weather cools and crops fail, you know what you do? You eat less and have fewer kids. An earthquake destroys your city? OK, then you just rebuild it. This is why "weather" is a verb in English meaning to withstand something. It's just the weather, you can survive it.

It's war. War is what destroys a civilization. Everyone knows it.
>>
>>18694523
The end of the Holocene climatic optimum coincides precisely with their total collapse.
The Green Sahara disappeared at this same time too.

They were too heavily dependent on farming and their primitive model was not sustainable even in the more favorable climate which characterized most of the early Neolithic, that's why the pastoralists who they had previously spent centuries trading with survived them and probably absorbed their survivors.
This is what makes the most sense. They were Goldilocks people who enjoyed millenia of perfect weather, employed destructive exploitation of what must have been at the time unthinkably enormous forests, and ultimately their society couldn't adapt when that equation changed.
>>
>>18694344
There was no "trash" in ancient times. Trash piling up outside is caused by non biodegradable items like plastic
>>
>>18694758
Biodegradable trash is still trash and it accumulates. It means they lived in filth, rotting shit, and swarms of fleas and houseflies.
>>
>>18694531
Where exactly is the archaeological evidence of this war?

There simply isn't anything to go on, we know why they set those houses on fire, it was for vitrification.
Moreover, if you were to compare their respective known population sizes to the PIE you would realize that these nomads could not possibly submit them even with the aid of horse drawn wagons unless their enormous zerg numbers were first absolutely devastated either by multi-year regional famine or a black death tier pestilence.

Like, your kneejerk reaction to the mention of climate reveals your analysis is painfully one dimensional.
It's funny, if you really want to completely reject things like man made climate change you should know that examples of climate shifts in the long distant past actually prove that modern fluctuations are well within the realm of the natural rather than artificial.

Still. This is just an objective fact.
Things like soil degradation, erosion, and mass deforestation all have a devastatingly negative ecological impact downstream of which are dire implications for any human social system that relies on that environment.
All of that is what they were doing, and it's what we're doing today too. There's a reason billions will unironically die without industrial fertilizer, we have exhausted and depleted much of our agricultural land because modern agriculture is too intensive and not regenerative but extractive.

See the Maya as a good example.
Famously, deforestation is the primary why Mesopotamia is the way it is now.

>weather and climate are the same thing
no, not at all actually
>>

no it doesn't, you're just lying

you need this narrative to be true as post hoc justification for modern degrowth political insanity.

The irony is that there were probably tons of Trypallians obsessed with degrowth and sustainability and caring for the forest and making sure not to erode the soil just like you because they were vegetarian manlet freaks who got destroyed by Yamnaya

> the pastoralists who they had previously spent centuries trading with survived them
another lie, see this is why you can't talk about this stuff.
The pastoralists who Cucuteni traded with for centuries were sedentary pastoralists. They herded sheep and cattle and horses, but they lived in one fixed location, usually a riverine valley.
Actual nomadic pastoralism, where permanent settlement is completely abandoned and tents, wagons, and horses are the basis of an entirely mobile lifestyle, only emerged with Yamnaya in 3300BC. These were essentially a completely new kind of people, basically one family, we can trace one haplogroup subclade Z2103 that appears in 80-95% of Yamnaya burials.

And what a coincidence, once this new kind of nomadic pastoralism appears, the kind that famously overran and displaced every culture it ever encountered, one century later Cucuteni Trypallia appears to have been overrun and displaced! Probably a coincidence. Probably just the weather!

And no, there was no "absorbing the survivors" from Cucuteni Trypallia. There is no evidence of a hybrid pastoralist-farmer population in Cucuteni territory folllowing its collapse. They were just erased.
>>
>>18694765
>these nomads could not possibly submit them even with the aid of horse drawn wagons unless their enormous zerg numbers were first absolutely devastated either by multi-year regional famine or a black death tier pestilence
except there wasn't, there is no evidence that yersinia pesistis or any other plague accompanied Yamnaya migrations, and like I said, the time of Cucuteni Trypallia's collapse was a time of perfectly fine climatic conditions, it was nice and temperate.
>>
also the steppe nomads quite famously did somehow conquer populations that were 10-30x their size in Greece and Anatolia. That's how you ended up with Bronze Age genetics where the average person or even the nobility were only 1/10th to 1/15th steppe ancestry, but the language and religion were steppe
>>

Delusional.
No, all the available evidence suggests otherwise.

>is no evidence of a hybrid pastoralist-farmer population in Cucuteni territory folllowing its collapse
There absolutely is though.
EEF admixture is a fact, even if it's mostly female mediated.
CT linked had even shows up later in IE contexts.

You don't even need to invoke post collapse mixing.
Samples from their late period already show introgression of steppe admixture in CT samples, and the reverse is true too with steppe samples showing farmer admixture.
They weren't just trading, they were intermarrying before CT culture faded.

>pastoralists who Cucuteni traded with for centuries were sedentary pastoralists
literally the exact same cultural horizon that Yamna emerged from
In fact, there is conclusive evidence of CT trade with the Yamna themselves and it isn't hard to find

You just know absolutely nothing about this subject, whereas I remember everything I learned years ago because I popularized knowledge of them on this board by making successive threads on it.

>There absolutely is though.
>EEF admixture is a fact, even if it's mostly female mediated.
>CT linked had even shows up later in IE contexts.
no it doesn't, the EEF admixture in Indo-Europeans comes from Globular Amphora Culture in the case of Corded Ware descendants, and Aknashen-like Caucasus Neolithic sources for the the case of Yamnaya descendants. Again this is from the paper Genetic Origin of the Europeans, you have to read this paper before talking about it. There is no evidence of Cucuteni admixture.
>they were intermarrying before CT culture faded.
no evidence
> the reverse is true too with steppe samples showing farmer admixture
no it doesn't, again this came from Aknashen-like sources and was confused for CT because of geographic proximity

>literally the exact same cultural horizon that Yamna emerged from
that's not the point I was making, your oldfaggot neuroplasticity-drained brain is incapable of subtlety. The point is that although 3600-3300BC Sredny Stog and earlier Khvalynsk were precursor cultures to Yamnaya, Yamnaya can be viewed as an entirely new cultural phenomenon. Sredny didn't even have wheels!

> whereas I remember everything I learned years ago
least surprising revelation is that you're an oldfaggot whose lies are a decade out of date.

You've just lied a dozen times in this thread, it started immediately with the "climatic optimum" lie and just kept building

oldfaggot meltdown. you tried injecting your retarded politics onto stone age vegans and now you're mentally raped by /pol/ brainrot.
Telling me to "go back" there and now you're talking about flock cameras and data centers lmfaooo
>>
Sredny and other Western steppe cultures have contact with Cucuteni and Balkan cultures for hundreds of years. It's relatively uneventful because Sredny are essentially advanced hunter-fishers. They live in one place in a village and herd their cattle, and although their warriors and merchants go on long trips, the tribe remains located in one place.

Then there's an unprecedented cultural transformation. They invent or acquire wheels, wagons, sledges, abandon all permanent settlements, and suddenly set out on 2000km long migrations, all the way to the Altai Mountains. Everyone they come in contact with gets annihilated.
Seems like a big change!
Unlike the climate which was temperate and stable.
>>
fun fact, the 5.2 kiloyear event is why Otzi the Iceman got frozen in a glacier and is so well preserved

pure coincidence

Cucuteni Trypallia survived another ten generations after that event, and their megacity dispersal was twenty generations prior. It was Yamnaya that destroyed them.

> >no evidence
>Anyone can look it up, it's been well established in the literature for years actually.
can you even follow your own posts? There's no evidence of Cucuteni admixture in Yamnaya or Sredny Stog or Khvalynsk precursors, you were talking about intermarriage. The EEF-like component in Yamnaya is from Caucasus Aknashen-like sources, not CT.

You admitted yourself you're a decade out of date, you don't know what's in the Reich labs papers. But you should know Haak et al, that came out 11 years ago.
>>
The Yamnaya precursor Khvalynsk cemeteries famously have Cucuteni copper beads in their burials, but you were disingenuously using that for an argument that Yamnaya intrusion couldn't explain the collapse of Cucuteni, as if those copper bead burials prove some history of peaceful coexistence.

The copper bead burials appear to be in warrior contexts. They're buried with polished stone maceheads, and bird-bone whistles that were used by traveling warriors for communication. The beads could have just as easily been stolen or raided, probably much more likely given these culture's descendants' behavior, as traded. And if the beads were raided that would literally directly oppose your own argument.
>>
>>18694902
I didn't randomly start talking about "degrowth", shill.
You did.

>>18694889
No archaeological evidence of that though.

All the available evidence points to a period of steady decline after the aforementioned climate event caused things to become cold and arid, population collapse falling 3 or 4 fold, and then gradual assimilation by the growing PIE.
This is actually the current academic consensus.
>>
>>18694873

No, the academic consensus is that the EEF-like admixture in Yamnaya came from Caucasus Aknashen-like, not CT, which I've had to tell you three times now and you keep ignoring because you were wrong.
Also

Although some users with PhDs in voices in their heads and doctorates in haplogroup discussions on Twitter say no, they weren't matriarchal. They had elaborate architecture, fortifications, and cult buildings. This shows that it wasn't a simple egalitarian village; there was a hierarchical organization, with tribal and cult centers that controlled the movement of important raw materials like salt, flint, copper, and finished products like pottery. In fact, there is much less evidence of social stratification in Bronze Age nomadic societies for comparison.

wrong, Cucuteni never buried their dead and never carved any statues of warriors or kings, only women, young boys, and seated, bent-over, mourning men.
Meanwhile nomads had fucking kurgans lmfao.
There's also the Khvanlynsk cemetery where you can see the nomads gave certain people rich burials with jewelry and fine polished maces, others got animal bones, while most of them got nothing.
> there was a hierarchical organization
no evidence for anything like that in CT

the point isn't that they were matriarchal, they were matristic. Women were the focus of the culture, not the leaders.

>inb4 Vinca necropolis
different culture and sort of predates Cucuteni.

People will look at this comfy life and praise stepeniggery and barbarism instead, man I YEARN for such a close knit community and integrated social life, "the longhouse" is literally superior.

>barbarism
ANF were more barbaric than the steppe"niggers".

These "close knit communities" would torture captives by breaking their shinbones before dumping their bodies in mass graves.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talheim_Death_Pit

They'd also drag victims across Europe to be roasted and eaten at freakish orlok cannibal rituals
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herxheim_(archaeological_site)

They also decided to live in 40,000 resident megacities before the invention of running water or plumbing that got so foul they had to be periodically burned, as OP described.

The steppe"nigger" conquest brought unprecedented peace, stability, harmony, and civilization.

why? both participants are posting here, the distinguishing feature is farmer and steppe.

Do you want to virtue signal and talk about what a wholesome cute vegan manlet farmer you are before you're dragged off to be eaten at Herxheim, or do you want to race thousands of kms on horseback across the open steppe under glorious skies?

Inside every cozy tightknit longhouse is a crazy grainbrained monster licking his chops waiting to enslave you, or worse.

Here's a reminder and that is sample RISE 550.In the Lazaridis et al "Southern Arc" Supplementary Materials, p. 317, there appears the following:
>The next set of Y-chromosomes of Neolithic-to-Bronze Age coalescence all belong to haplogroup R-L51 (within R-M269) and its descendants, a lineage with a very European-centric distribution (263 non-Southern Arc samples are all from Europe) and an estimated Eneolithic-era origin (5500-6800 BP).The two earliest examples of this important European clade we were able to detect were in Late Neolithic Switzerland (Aes25; 2864-2501 calBCE) (461) in an outlier individual with high-steppe ancestry in an otherwise Megalithic contextand possiblyin a Yamnaya individual (RISE550.SG(4) from Peshany V in Kalmykia), but on the basis of only a single read from a G>A SNP (PF6535(5465148G>A:A))

You're barking and desperately wanting my attention, but I'm really not reading.
1)The RISE550 has 25 readings in R-M269 equivalents, all positive.
2) we have five Yamnayans R-L51 (one of which is R-L52),
3) R1b-L151 entered peninsular Europe with that branch of Yamnaya that would become Corded Warenorth of the Carpathian. 4). I20499, 2880-2633 calBC, an R1b-L52 (so far), mtDNA U4b1b1, from Zabalj-Medisova-humka, Serbia, and and I12823, 3300-2500 BC (estimate from archaeological context), R1b-L51, mtDNAK1b2b,Smeeni, Romania, just west of the Black Sea. I wonder how long it will take the big names and Brazilians to realize that R-L51 has been found in Yamnaya. Not only that, but it has been found in Yamnaya in widely separated locations, which is an indication that it was widespread in Yamnaya

He was still here seething lol

I thought he really left the thread but no he was still here just seething his nut off.
>>
It's really funny that he's just given up on R1a-M417, the actual core Corded Ware lineage, and settled for L151, but he can't even get that.
>>
Advice: drop your weird personality with the insults and the samefagging, and post anonymously until, if such a thing ever happens, an L151 or M417 Yamnaya sample is found, and then you can come back and use the personality again and gloat and spam the thread with your victory.
Not that it will ever happen

Okay, okay guys. I got the Yamnaya haplogroups memorized. So what were the haplogroups of the Cucu birds?

Why are you spreading misinformation? They weren't matriarchal. You should stop lying. The anthropomorphic female clay figures suggest that different figures were used for different purposes, such as protection, and therefore not all represent a goddess.
>no evidence for anything
>In general the author concludes that the large size dwellings of this group may be interpreted as men’s houses. Such dwellings were inhabited by the young people belonging to a certain sex-age group, and served for training in various fields of crafts and activities. Men’s houses were also used for gathering the male part of the tribe for magic rituals and feasts. Patriarchs taught young people the rules of common living and taboos of their society. This explains the dwelling size used to gather a particular or supposed number of the representatives of sex-age groups of patriarchs and young men.

>In addition to objects of economic and sacred purpose in the structure, there was a large number of weapons, namely a quiver of arrows, darts, spears (Chernovol, Radomsky 2015). Therefore, this room combined economic, sacred and “military” functions. Most likely, during the Eneolithic period, such a room could have been a men's house, which combined all these functions. In particular, this is confirmed by the discovered flint preforms, since it was in men's houses that economic activities aimed at educating young people of a certain age group took place.

>Among other things, the men's house was where the male members of the tribe gathered to conduct magical rituals and celebrations (Lévi-Strauss 2018, pp. 57-60). The elders of the tribe taught the youth the rules of residence and prohibitions that were inherent in their society. This explains the size of the building, which was designed for the probable number of representatives of a certain sexual and age group of young men and the elders who were there to monitor the process of training the youth (Lévi-Strauss 2018). Based on the fact that a person needs about 2 m2 for an overnight stay, it is likely that such a room as building 3 of the Ozhev-Ostrov settlement could accommodate from 50 to 80 people. The residents who were constantly in it could number about 35 people.

>Conditionally, some large structures of early Trypillia, mentioned above, are included in this category of buildings. Due to their poor state of preservation, it is impossible to determine the size of their useful area; we can only state that these structures are the largest for this stage of cultural development. It can be assumed that a structure of this purpose was built based on the size of the expected sex-age group or the number of male population that could gather there in the future. In this case, the size of this building should have approximately corresponded to the size of the settlement.

I appreciate your effort in keeping the discussion active. My focus is more on Indo-Europeans, but it's obvious they weren't "egalitarian." I found this article and thought it was interesting. The data directly contradicts the myth of a perfectly horizontal or uniform society. The mega-sites were under structural and demographic differentiation, where certain families held distinct advantages in terms of labor and reproductive success, generating measurable socioeconomic inequality.
