Daniel Conohan, the Hog Trail Killer, was the 140th person executed by Florida since 1976. A suspected serial killer, he was convicted of murdering one and suspected of murdering at least a dozen transients and gay men in Charlotte County during the 1990s. Conohan was born in Charlotte, North Carolina on May 11, 1954, but the family soon moved to Punta Gorda, Florida. He realized he was gay in his teen years; his conservative Southern parents disapproved and sent him to several psychiatrists. Daniel insisted he was normal and hated how his parents mistreated him. He later claimed "It wasn't the kind of thing you were open about in the 1970s, but I found a gay bar and if I got there early they wouldn't card me. Being gay is part of God's plan, too."
He was remembered in high school for being a quiet loner. Conohan graduated in 1973 and four years later enlisted in the Navy. He was stationed at Naval Station Great Lakes in Illinois. A few months into Conohan's enlistment, he was disciplined for taking fellow sailors off-base for sex. Some time after that, Conohan got into a fistfight with a colleague after trying to force him to perform oral sex on him. He was dishonorably discharged, but decided to stay in Chicago and remained there until 1991, when he moved back to Florida to live with his aging parents.In 1995, Conohan became a licensed practical nurse and graduated first in his class at Charlotte Vocational-Technical Center. He was hired by Charlotte Regional Medical Center in Punta Gorda; when not at work, his main pastime was cruising gay bars. "I learned there are a lot of hitchhikers on US 41 from North Port to Fort Myers, and some of them were looking to perform sex acts for money," he told detectives. Conohan was suspected in the Hog Trail Murders from 1993-96, although he was only proven to have killed one victim.

On February 1, 1994, a mutilated male corpse was found off Biscayne Boulevard in Port Charlotte by two hunters. The victim had been dead about a month and had rope burns on his skin and pelvic region. The genitals were amputated and discarded. The victim was not identified until 2021 when DNA testing proved him to be 27 year old Gerald Lombard of Lowell, Massachusetts, who disappeared from his Florida home in 1991 and was remembered by family members as a drifter.On New Year's Day 1996, a North Port family's dog brought home a male human skull to a residence on Ferendina Street. The residents said the dog had been bringing home bones for some time. Police searched the area and found the chest and pelvic bones about half a mile away. More bones were found in an isolated woodland; only the right hand and chest still had flesh on them. The exact cause of death could not be determined, but it looked like the body was extensively mutilated, particularly around the genital area. This victim remains unidentified. On March 7, a man driving down Route 75 in North Port pulled over by the side of the road to relieve himself. He saw a naked male corpse positioned face-up in the shape of a cross after passing the forest line and called police in a panic. The victim was killed about ten days earlier, stabbed four times and his genitals mutilated. His feet were covered with cuts and scraped and slash marks could be seen on on his upper body, suggesting he tried to flee from his killer. Rope marks on the body also suggested he was tied up and a nearby tree had further rope marks on it. The victim was identified in 1999 as 35 year old William Melarango.
Another man's skull was found in Charlotte County on April 17 and the rest of his body as well as a second victim were found in nearby woods. The first body was dismembered; it was identified as 25 year old Ken Smith. He was identified after his sister saw a news report describing a faint tattoo that could be seen on his left shoulder. The second body was a man who'd been raped, murdered, and mutilated only a day earlier, and was identified as 21 year old Richard Montgomery. His mother reported that a few weeks ago, he told her he met a friend named Dan Conohan. The media began speculating that a serial killer was on the loose.Conohan was identified to police in May by several witnesses, including one who narrowly escaped his clutches when his car got stuck in some mud. He was also connected to a report filed in Fort Myers two years earlier by Stanley Burden, who said a man propositioned him for sex, tied him to a tree, and attempted to strangle him. Burden survived and still had rope scars on his body. Investigators searched Conohan's house and obtained his credit card records, turning up evidence that proved he'd killed Montgomery and attacked Burden. He was arrested for attempted murder on July 3. Conohan was charged with murdering Montgomery in February 1997 and the charges for the attack on Burden dropped. Three months later, another skeleton was found in Port Charlotte, off Quesada Avenue. The decedent was estimated to have died a couple of years ago. He was identified ten months later as 24 year old William Patten, who disappeared in 1993.
He waived his right to a jury trial and Burden was the star witness for the prosecution. Conohan's public defender countered that Burden had served a sentence in Ohio for child molestation and was not a credible witness. On August 17, 1999, Judge William Blackwell found him guilty of first degree murder and kidnapping. A jury voted for the death penalty, and it was imposed in December.On October 19, 2000, more bones were found in a wooded area west of Toledo Blade Boulevard in North Port. Three months later, landscapers found human remains on Grouper Hole Drive in Boca Grande. On November 28, 2001, construction workers near US 41 in Charlotte Harbor found male human remains. On January 6, 2002, a body was found near a landfill site off Zemel Road in Punta Gorda. These were identified in 2024 as the remains of 44 year old Alejandro Lago, who vanished from Miami in November '01.
On March 23, 2007, eight human skeletons were found in woods near Fort Myers, the largest such discovery in Florida history. The discovery began when a property surveyor found two skills. Police searched the area and found the other remains. There were no clothing items or traces of coffins, body bags, or anything else that could hold a corpse, nor any tire tracks or indication that someone had been to this location recently. The cause of death for the victims was ruled to be homicide and it was near where Stanley Burden was attacked. The first victim was identified in November as John Blevins, 38, a transient from the Fort Myers area last seen in 1995. Another victim was identified as 21 year old Erik Kohler, who went missing from Port Charlotte in late 1995. The third victim, Jonathan Tihay, 24, was identified in September 2008. He was a drifter who disappeared from Fort Myers in October 1995. Another victim was identified in 2022 as 30 year old Robert Soden of Fort Myers, who disappeared in 1996. The other four victims remain unidentified.
Conohan appealed his conviction to the state supreme court on the grounds that there was insufficient evidence of his guilt, the prosecutors had made inappropriate comments during the trial, and that the autopsy and crime scene photos should not have been admitted as evidence. The court upheld the sentence. The Supreme Court also refused to hear the case. Further state and Federal appeals over the years accomplished nothing. Florida governor Ron DeSantis signed Conohan's death warrant on August 11, 2026 with an execution date set for September 10. He made a last appeal to the Supreme Court on the 8th, which was rejected.The execution by lethal injection was carried out on time after Conohan had a last meal consisting of chicken, a baked potato, corn, a soda, and pumpkin pie. He had no final words.
