Song dynasty had the most prosperous trap in human history, population doubled, paper money invented, cities booming, tea houses on every corner, poetry competitions, the world's richest economy, and the Jurchen Jin already massing in the north, the entire northern empire lost in 1127 in a single catastrophic invasion that took the emperor captive and erased a century of refinement in one season. The scholars writing the beautiful ink paintings were one bad exam score away from permanent obscurity, one wrong political alliance from exile, and the Mongols were already on their way to end all of it by 1279.
