Everybody knows about the Depression in the US after the 1930s. but from what I understand, the one that more or less took place on and off from the great financial panic of 1873 throughout the 1880s and 1890s (Mumford's "Brown Decades") gets way less attention. It was just as grim as the one before WWII: Mass unemployment with huge gangs of hungry men wandering around the country begging or looting, bloody strike suppression, a wave of political assassinations, the farming class ruined by fall of consumption, the first appearance of boycotts, etc. I think the period from after the civil war until the beginning of the 20th century really doesn't get that much attention at all in general, but most sources i've read on it portray it as pretty grim times. What are some good books on the topic?

The Panic of 1837 also brought on a severe nationwide depression; which all but bankrupted the population and at least a few states

[This was the panic accidently brought on by President Jackson's mishandling of the Bank of The United States situation]

it's funny though but the government did nothing and most of these panics resolved themselves in a few years unlike FDR dragging the Depression out a decade with his retardation
